Laurier student newspapers nominated for national awards
Dec 16/13Laurier’s student newspapers were recently shortlisted in five categories of the annual Canadian University Press John H. McDonald awards for excellence in student journalism.
The Cord, the student paper on Laurier’s Waterloo campus, made the shortlist in three categories:
Layout and Design
“I survived brain surgery, now what?”
Wade Thompson (English and Film Studies ’12)
“Fighting through: Just eight days after losing his father, Max Allin plays the best game of basketball in Laurier history”
Shelby Blackley, third-year English and Sociology student
“Getting Exposure or Getting Exploited” (also published in The Cord Community Edition)
The Sputnik, the student paper on Laurier’s Brantford campus, made the shortlist in two categories:
“Inside the methadone clinic”
Allison Leonard (Journalism and Contemporary Studies ’13)
“Living with joy despite having Down syndrome”
Brittany Bennett, first-year Journalism student
The award winners will be announced Jan. 11 at the Canadian University Press national conference in Edmonton. The John H. McDonald awards (commonly known as “The Johnnies”) have been recognizing the work of Canadian student journalists since 2003.
