Laurier earns top marks in Globe and Mail’s Canadian University Report

Wilfrid Laurier University has again scored top marks in the Globe and Mail’s annual Canadian University Report, earning one A+, six As and an above-average rating in 25 categories.

Laurier received an A+ for faculty members’ subject knowledge, and an A in each of the following key categories:

• Most satisfied students
• Quality of education
• Class size
• University atmosphere
• Sense of community
• Sense of personal safety and security

Laurier ranked No. 1 in its category for class size, and it shared the No. 1 spot for quality of teaching and for faculty knowledge. Laurier ranked above average in 25 categories — up from 17 last year. Some of the areas in which Laurier scored above average include student services, student residences, sense of community, sports and recreational services, availability of financial assistance, career preparation and reputation among employers.

“Laurier continues to excel in the most important categories,” said Laurier president Dr. Max Blouw. “These latest rankings demonstrate that our quality of education remains high and our students are quite satisfied with their overall university experience.”

In addition to earning one A+ and six As, Laurier received 10 A- grades in the following key categories:

• Teaching quality
• Student-faculty interaction
• Faculty availability to students    
• Diversity of extracurricular activities
• Tolerance of diverse opinions and ideas
• Fitness, recreation, and athletics facilities
• Recreation and athletics programs and services
• Library hours
• Online library resources
• Library staff

The Globe and Mail’s annual Canadian University Report is based on a survey of undergraduate students at 53 universities across Canada. Universities are grouped and compared according to their number of undergraduates. Laurier is included in the medium (12,000-22,000) category.
