Retirement dinner for Mike Belanger to raise money for student bursary
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
Mike “Bones” Belanger, a former Laurier student and director of residential services for 30 years, has a storied history at the university. To mark his retirement in December, a benefit dinner is being held on Jan. 13 at the St. George Banquet Hall in Waterloo.
Ticket sales from the dinner will help support the Mike Belanger Residence Life Award, which was created to provide financial support for future student members of the Residence Life team who improve the Laurier experience for students and demonstrate financial need.
Former Laurier don Rob Hums and Chris Dodd, manager of Housing Services and Residence Life at Laurier, spearheaded the creation of the award and helped organize the benefit dinner.
“There are so many people who have gone through residence life and been affected by Mike’s work,” said Dodd. “We wanted to put together this dinner to honour his contributions and raise a bit more money for the bursary.”
Among Belanger’s many contributions to the Laurier community is the creation of a residence-life program, which helps students deal with the transition to university and the challenges of living away from home for the first time. It’s renowned among Canadian universities.
Belanger first came to Laurier as a student in 1971, and earned the nickname “Bones” because he was 6’4” and 140 pounds – a name that has stuck. He worked as a manager of the Turret, where he met his wife Leah, and was hired as director of housing in 1980.
To buy tickets for the benefit dinner, contact Kathryn Christie at firstname.lastname@example.org by Jan. 3. The reception begins at 5:15 p.m., followed by dinner, speeches and presentations.
The Laurier community is also invited to a university reception being held in Belanger’s honour on Dec. 13 in the Paul Martin Centre at 3:30 p.m.
The Laurier community can leave a message for Belanger, or make a donation to the bursary, at an online tribute website: www.wlu.ca/tribute/profile/mikebelanger
