WATERLOO — Laurier’s School of Business & Economics is heading to Calgary with its successful Economic Outlook series taking place Tuesday, April 17.
The breakfast event features Jeffry Frieden, professor of Government at Harvard University, along with Craig Wright, executive vice-president and chief economist for RBC Financial Group. Deborah Yedlin of the Calgary Herald will moderate the event.
Presented by the Laurier Centre for Economic Research & Policy Analysis (LCERPA), the event will consider our economic future: Will Europe create stability or instability in the global economy? Can America avoid languishing in a lost decade? Is it full steam ahead for Alberta? And, ultimately, is Canada’s economic future beyond our control?
"Traditionally, much economic growth in Canada has come from the United States, an economy now facing a massive national debt, falling real estate prices, high unemployment and a financial system bracing for regulation — all in an election year. Meanwhile, China continues to grow while the situation in Europe remains critical,” says Bill Morrison, associate professor and director of LCERPA. “The question is, can the Canadian economic compass point us in the right direction amidst the fog created by these powerful global forces?"
Jeffry Frieden specializes in the politics of international monetary and financial relations at Harvard University’s Department of Government. He is the author of numerous books, including co-author of the award winning book Lost Decades: The Making of America’s Debt Crisis and the Long Recovery (2011).
Craig Wright manages the RBC Financial Group teams responsible for the company’s global macroeconomic, financial market and foreign exchange strategic research. A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, he joined RBC in 1994 after seven years as an economist in the financial services industry.
Laurier’s Economic Outlook event begins at 7:00 a.m. at The Calgary Petroleum Club, 319 Fifth Ave. S.W., and is sponsored by CMA – Certified Management Accountants Alberta and the Calgary Herald. Formal presentations and moderated discussion will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Tickets are $50.
