Laurier announces Integrated Planning and Resource Management Initiative

Laurier will be inviting all members of the university to participate in an Integrated Planning and Resource Management initiative to help identify the future priorities of the university and inform the best approach to resource management. The initiative will build on the foundations developed through the Visioning Laurier exercise and the Academic Plan to determine how Laurier shapes itself for the future.

At the end of what is expected to be a yearlong initiative, the university will ultimately arrive at a series of stated priorities for the institution as well as a detailed action plan to implement the goals.

“This will be a made-at-Laurier approach that will be completely transparent every step of the way,” said Max Blouw, Laurier president and vice-chancellor. “It’s important to us that it is a truly collaborative and inclusive process that involves all members of the Laurier community and results in strategies and priorities created by the Laurier community rather than imposed from the top down.”

The initiative recognizes that there is a collective responsibility for Laurier’s future success, and that the outcome of the process will be directly dependent on input from the Laurier community. The process will also consider existing realities, most notably the broader provincial and national context of economic challenges and financial pressures faced by the post-secondary education sector, issues identified in the Drummond report, as well as Laurier’s status as a comprehensive university.

“Once the goals and strategic priorities have been identified, they will inform how we allocate resources in the future,” said Jim Butler, vice-president: Finance and Administration. “We will examine our existing budgeting process and make changes to ensure our resources are aligned in support of these priorities.”

The project launches with a workshop on April 25 and 26 and will involve a cross-section of Laurier stakeholders including the Board of Governors, senior administration, and faculty and staff. A website will be launched in May to outline opportunities for input and provide the Laurier community with updates about the process.

Two external facilitators who have expertise working with universities through these processes will lead the April workshop and help guide the process here at Laurier.

Following the workshop, the initiative is expected to follow a staged process:

Phase 1: Planning and resource allocation workshops
Phase 2: University planning and resource allocation taskforce established and begins work
Phase 3: Collaborative planning, consensus building and communications.
