Warm weather and sunny skies are great reasons to get active outside. Grab your sunscreen and join the Sun Life Financial Centre for Physically Active Communities at Wilfrid Laurier University in the Community Better Challenge this June.
Organized by ParticipACTION, the Community Better Challenge is a national physical activity initiative that encourages Canadians to get active. Participants can track their physical activity minutes in the ParticipACTION app. The community that logs the most physical activity minutes will be named Canada’s Most Active Community and receive a $100,000 grand prize to support physical activity initiatives. Regional prizes will also be awarded.
A wide variety of physical activities can be tracked, from gardening and walking to swimming and mowing the lawn. Individuals and teams are welcome to participate. The Sun Life Financial Centre for Physically Active Communities will also issue weekly challenges and prizes through its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.
“We know that physical activity contributes to overall health and well-being, as does being outdoors,” says Nicole Vandermade, program coordinator with the Sun Life Financial Centre for Physically Active Communities. “The Community Better Challenge is an excellent opportunity to get moving, get away from the screen and contribute to community wellness.”
The Sun Life Financial Centre for Physically Active Communities is a community outreach initiative of Laurier’s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Activity that aims to improve activity levels and the overall health of youth within Waterloo Region. The centre provides free or low-cost physical activity programming to high-priority youth in an effort to prevent chronic illnesses associated with sedentary lifestyles.
