As we approach Canada Day 2021, it’s important to recognize that this day has many different meanings. For some, it’s a day to spend with family and friends to relax or celebrate, while for others it is a reminder that as a country we have work to do to live up to our ideals. This year especially, Canada Day provides an opportunity for us to reflect on Canada’s history of colonial violence, and to recognize the trauma and harm policies like Indian Residential Schools have caused and the lasting impact they continue to have on Indigenous Peoples. I am optimistic that we can live up to our ideals as we continue to learn together and strive to make each decade better and more just than the last one.
