On Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m., Wilfrid Laurier University will join Universities Canada and universities across the country in a moment of silence to remember the victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 on Jan. 8.
The tragedy has made a profound impact on Canadians, including those within the higher education community. Fifty-one of the plane’s 176 passengers were employed at or studying in 23 Canadian post-secondary institutions. Laurier offers its condolences and support to our university colleagues who lost members of their community in this tragedy, including our closest neighbours at the University of Waterloo.
Laurier faculty, staff and students are invited to observe a moment of silence. For those who would like to join with colleagues and friends, they can gather at one of the locations below.
Beginning at 12:45 p.m., remarks will be made by Mark Harris, principal-dean of Martin Luther University College, Kathy Bazinet, president: Wilfrid Laurier University’s Graduate Students’ Association and Zemar Hakim, president: Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union.
Beginning at 12:45 p.m., remarks will be made by Heidi Northwood, senior executive officer, and Adam Lawrence, dean of students. Student clubs using the space during this time will pause their activities for the remarks and moment of silence.
Beginning at 12:50 p.m., Dawn Buzza, dean: Faculty of Social Work, will lead a moment of silence.
Beginning at 12:50 p.m., members of the Laurier community are invited to gather at the Toronto office to participate in the moment of silence.
Participating in one of Laurier’s gatherings or Universities Canada’s moment of silence is voluntary. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to participate in other ways that are meaningful to them.
Universities Canada will post a message of condolence through its social media channels beginning today. All are welcome to share their message to honour the lives lost and show collective support for those impacted by the tragedy:
