Laurier’s Department of Physics and Computer Science will welcome its first cohort of students to the Master of Science degree in Applied Computing (MAC) in September 2017.
The program will be available at Laurier’s Waterloo campus and features three program streams: a full-time, thesis option; a full-time, cooperative education option; and a part-time, coursework option. The department plans to add an online-only program stream by the fall of 2018.
“As technology becomes more sophisticated, so does the skillset required for the computing profession,” says Chinh Hoang, a physics and computer science professor at Laurier and department chair. “Laurier's Master of Applied Computing provides students with an advanced computing skillset that captures both the theoretical and practical knowledge of computing.”
All three degree-program streams require core courses in Practical Algorithm Design and a seminar course in technology entrepreneurship, providing project-based learning opportunities that blend theory and practice.
Students in the full-time co-op stream will complete a capstone project course designed to further connect their work and academic experiences.
Overall, Hoang says the program will prepare graduates for employment in big data and big science, web- and mobile-application development, as well as enterprise computing. The part-time program is tailored to professionals already working in computing-related roles, providing an opportunity to further develop their skillset and knowledge base.
Spaces are available in the full-time, thesis option program and the part-time program. Applications will be considered until both programs are full. A complete application checklist is available from the MAC program page.
The Master of Science in Applied Computer is the Faculty of Science’s sixth master’s degree program, following programs in chemistry, integrative biology, kinesiology, mathematics and psychology.
