Being a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Brantford – Students at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus will give their funny bones a workout on Wednesday, Nov. 29, during “Comedy Unleashed: Hilarity Fur Charity," a student-organized event in support of the Brant County SPCA.

Comedy Unleashed: Hilarity Fur Charity will be held in the lobby of the Research and Academic Centre West, 150 Dalhousie St., between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. It will include activities such as a photo booth, kiss the pug stand, pie the professor event and a variety of other carnival games. There will also be a silent auction featuring items donated by local businesses.

The student organizers of Comedy Unleashed are enrolled in CT407 “Humour," a course taught by Professor Peter Farrugia. The course examines how humour is used to bring attention to serious social issues and explores how race, ethnicity, occupation and other factors influence what is deemed to be funny. The fundraiser has become a popular feature of this unique course on humour.

“Students are able to learn about their own agency, their ability to make a difference in their communities,” said Farrugia.

One of the features of the biennial event is that students select the charity to receive support. This year, proceeds raised will go to the Brant County SPCA to help animals in need of food, medical supplies or surgery. Representatives from the SPCA will be on site with information about the organization and welcome the chance to talk with members of the public.

Student Deanna Colling said Comedy Unleashed: Hilarity Fur Charity provides the “opportunity to put the theories we have learned to the test by fundraising for the Brant County SPCA.”
