Dawn Buzza, is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University. Dr. Buzza currently teaches Learning and Child Development (EU401) and the Professional Learning Seminar (EU404). She holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology and an M.A. in Education (Counselling) from Simon Fraser University.
Dr. Buzza’s research interests include child and adolescent development and self-regulated learning (SRL), or how students develop expertise in how to learn. Research on SRL involves consideration of learning strategies, metacognition and motivation. Some of her recent work in this area has examined the relationship between reflectiveness and SRL in teacher education candidates. Currently Dr. Buzza is investigating how SRL support early in high school can help students successfully navigate the challenges of transitioning from elementary to secondary school. This research involves collaborations with secondary teachers to develop and test classroom innovations that incorporate SRL into regular instructional activities and assessments.
Previously Dr. Buzza was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in learning, educational psychology and child and adolescent development. She was awarded the American Psychological Association's Dissertation Award and a Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Dr. Buzza has published and presented her research extensively, nationally and internationally.
Dr. Buzza’s prior experience includes work on university-level teaching and learning at the University of Waterloo and public sector consultation in British Columbia, where she led the development of new driver training and testing programs.
