He completed his PhD at the University of Waterloo in 1973 and became Department Chair shortly after. Art's research was carried out mostly at UW with Ian Dagg and Glynn Reesor (both now deceased) in microwave optics and broadband molecular spectroscopy. He became Full Professor in 1982 and in 1983 began a long stint as Dean of Arts and Science. In 1998, Art was appointed as Director of the Brantford Project to establish the Laurier Brantford Campus and became its Dean in 1999. In 2002, he returned to the Department to full-time teaching status teaching physics for life-science students, analog electronics, and astronomy.
