Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

The Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) program is an academic English program for applicants to Laurier who have to provide proof of English proficiency. If you have received an offer to Laurier with a condition to meet our English-language proficiency requirements, you can meet that condition by successfully completing the LEAF program.

The LEAF program will also prepare you for success in your undergraduate program by helping you adapt to the academic culture at Laurier and to life in Canada. You'll also complete a course for academic credit, meaning you'll start your undergraduate program having already completed a course towards your degree.Languages Canada logo

The LEAF program is accredited by Languages Canada, Canada's national language education association.

You'll study in the LEAF program at Laurier’s Brantford campus, a small and friendly campus located in the heart of downtown Brantford. The campus is integrated into the downtown core of the city, giving you the opportunity to practice your English by interacting with locals in the community as well as other Laurier students.

Learn more about the Brantford campus and explore the campus with our virtual tour.

Term Dates

The LEAF program offers four terms every year and you can start the program in any term. Whether you study in an 8-week term or a 14-week term, you'll receive the same academic experience and complete the same course content. The term dates are:

  • Fall 2021: Sept. 13 to Dec. 22
    • For the fall 2021 term, all classes will be offered online only but students who choose to travel to campus will be able to participate in in-person learning opportunities as well as other student activities and events.
  • Winter 2022: Jan. 5 to April 15

How to Apply

There are two ways to begin your LEAF program studies at Laurier, which vary depending on your academic goals.

  1. Apply to an academic program and to the LEAF program at the same time.
  2. Apply to study in the LEAF program only.

Applying to Undergraduate Studies and the LEAF Program

As part of your application to an undergraduate program at Laurier, you will have to submit proof of English proficiency. If you meet the academic requirements for your program but don’t meet the English proficiency requirements, you will receive an offer of admission with a condition to complete the LEAF program. After you successfully complete the LEAF program, you can register in your undergraduate program.

Our Undergraduate Admissions website has instructions for how to apply to Laurier.

Applying to the LEAF Program Only

If you wish to apply to the LEAF program only and not to undergraduate studies, complete and submit the LEAF Program Registration Form. In order to receive an offer of admission to the LEAF program, we require a current assessment of your English proficiency, which must be uploaded with your application form.

Laurier is planning a return to campus for the fall 2021 term, with a mix of remote, hybrid and in-person learning as well as a robust set of student services and activities. For the latest updates, refer to our coronavirus information page.

For the fall 2021 term, all classes, assessments and exams in the LEAF program will be delivered virtually. This provides students with the option of studying in the LEAF program at Laurier or from home.

LEAF program students who travel to Laurier for the fall term will have the opportunity to engage in in-person activities and events, as well as the option to live in residence.

All LEAF program students will have access to student services that will support their academic experience and success.
