Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

The LEAF program provides training in academic English to help prepare you for your future studies. The LEAF program also helps orient you to life in Canada and the academic culture of Laurier.

To determine which level is best suited to you, submit your IELTS or TOEFL score to the LEAF program. Once you successfully complete Level 5 of LEAF, you can begin your undergraduate studies.

If you have received a conditional offer of admission to Laurier, you will be required to complete a course for credit during Level 5 of the LEAF program. This will help you get a head start on your progress towards a degree, while also completing your LEAF program requirements. This course will be taught by a Laurier professor from our Faculty of Liberal Arts in Brantford and will feature a lecture, as well as a weekly tutorial. Students taking this course in the fall or winter terms will have the opportunity to enrol in the course alongside other Laurier undergraduate students.

Our LEAF instructors are highly qualified ESL instructors with experience teaching around the world and throughout Canada. Our courses focus on English and are designed to prepare you for successful undergraduate studies. Features of our curriculum include:

  • essay writing
  • listening to lectures
  • reading academic texts
  • learning university vocabulary

You will take the following core courses:

  • Listening and Speaking
  • Reading and Vocabulary
  • Writing and Research

You will also take additional courses, including:

  • Critical Thinking
  • Global Engagement
  • Grammar

In addition to improving your English, you are prepared for academic study using our “Laurier Readiness” criteria, which include completing assignments and arriving to class on time, speaking English and participating in group discussions, seeking out opportunities to improve your English, and reflecting on your learning.
