Third-Year Biochemistry and Biotechnology
When asked my name, I love nothing more than to say, “It’s Plummer, Tarique Plummer.” I'm an international student at Wilfrid Laurier University. I'm from Jamaica, and currently in my fourth year of my Honours Biochemistry and Biotechnology program.
The first time I came to Canada was two weeks before I was to begin my first year of courses at Laurier. Honestly, I was filled with anxiety but my smile screamed excitement! I left my entire family back home and I was alone, or so I thought. I quickly realized how welcoming the Laurier family was. People were interested in me. They cared and loved having me around. I felt valued.
"Inspiring Lives of Leadership and Purpose" is the mantra of the university, and also what I work so hard to epitomize. I got very involved in my first year. I was the vice-president of Training and Development of Bricker House Council; vice-president of the Caribbean Students Association; an opinion columnist for the university newspaper; a radio journalist for Radio Laurier; first-year executive representative of the Laurier Chemistry Association; and the list goes on. In second year, I was the residence education advisor, the club governance coordinator for Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union and vice-president of Research and Development of the Faculty of Science Students’ Association. Laurier is a student-run institution and I love that so much. I worked part-time, both on and off campus. I learned so much from the experiences!
I lived in residence for first year, returned as the residence education advisor in second year and now I am a Residence Life Don. There's something about Laurier that when you walk through the campus, you feel like you're accepted and valued. The school spirit and pride are so high that it's contagious. As I tackle my fourth year being the Chair of the Board and Chief Governance Officer of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union, every day I thank God that I made the decision to make Laurier the school for me, and I hope you do too.
