Third-Year Health Sciences
Niagara Falls, Ontario
Welcome to Laurier, future Golden Hawks!
My name is Tara Newman, and I am currently in my third year of the Honours Health Sciences program here at Laurier, working my way towards a minor in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. I aspire to go to medical school one day, and Laurier has made the experience of getting there so much easier.
The reason I chose Laurier is easy. Like many of you, I was in the same position three years ago when it came to choosing a university. A brand new place, so many new faces, and the brand new lifestyle scared me. But, it ended up being love at first sight. Every place I visited was so big and scary and I felt like a small spec in a very, very big world. However, the day I visited Laurier on the March Break open house I finally felt like someone. I felt as if I was valued. I could immediately tell that Laurier was a tight knit community that embodied acts of kindness, diversity, and inclusivity. I could see how much spirit each and every student had and how much love they had for their school. I could tell just by talking to my tour guide that this is the experience I wanted. Here, I knew I would not be just a number. I would be a person, and I could make a name for myself. I quickly fell in love and became a Laurier Golden hawk.
Throughout my time here at Laurier, I have been lucky to be involved in many clubs and volunteer positions on campus. With over 200 clubs, intramurals, and Student’s Union Committees, there really is something here at Laurier for everyone! In my first year, I was involved in my Residence House Council, which helped introduce me to new people and quickly make new friends both on and outside of my floor. Here, I was able to be a part of planning and organizing events for my community. As I grew more confident in my school, and myself in my second year I joined the Students Union Emergency Response Team, where I provided on call first-aid care to the community. I also had the opportunity to become an Instructional Assistant for a first year Chemistry Laboratory. Due to the smaller numbers at this school, a position like this is more available to undergraduate students!
I know choosing a university can be the most difficult decision of your life, but I have never once doubted my choice to come to Laurier. Throughout my years here I have met so many amazing people and had so many exceptional experiences. I cannot wait to see what the years to come hold!
I am very excited to meet you all in the fall when you choose to call Laurier home!
