Senior Campus Ambassador
Fourth-Year Business Administration
My name is Richard Alexander Williams I am a fourth-year BBA student here at Wilfrid Laurier University. I was born and raised in Dubai and moved to Canada to pursue my postsecondary education four years ago.
Being an international student, I understand the fears and worries that you might be having about choosing a place to study, whether you are choosing to study close to home or on the other side of the world. I remember sitting on my bed at night scrolling through dozens of websites and reading peoples’ advice about choosing a university. I had so many questions: Would I like the city? The people? Would I be able to fit in? I was nervous, but at the same time excited and eager to start this new chapter in my life.
After being at Laurier for almost three years, I have finally been able to answer these questions. The city of Waterloo is youthful and always lively, and the people are amazing. Have I been able to fit in? Absolutely! Over the past three years, I have been a part of several clubs on campus such as AIESEC and FootPatrol. I have worked at the bookstore, been a member of the Business Residence Learning Community, and participated in intramural sports such as soccer and handball. All of this has helped me to not only make friends, but to grow as a person. I’ve become part of a community at Laurier, and found a place where I can truly express myself.
Laurier is more than a school; it’s a family, and I learned this right from my first day. I remember I had just unpacked my suitcase, sat down on my bed, and thought to myself, “What am I going to do now?” I heard the commotion of other students also moving in, and I felt alone. I started asking myself again whether or not I had made the right decision. I was scared. Suddenly there was a knock on my door. My don came in to ask if everything was fine and to say that he was taking out a few of the people who had just moved in on our floor to see more of the university and have dinner. That day has stuck with me, but it isn’t the only day that people at Laurier made me feel part of something truly amazing, and that’s something that I try to pass on to my fellow students, and people like you coming to visit Laurier. I’m excited to share the spirit of Laurier with you, and to welcome you into our family.
