Online Strategies Development and the Curriculum

Supporting Faculty to Support Student Development
Lisetto-Smith, Oud, & Dawe

published: 2014 | Presentation | Online Research S.I.

The Library and the Study Skills & S.I. Centre have long collaborated with faculty members on numerous projects and programs to bring structured research and learning strategies development to undergraduate students at Laurier. In this information session, the presenters will showcase their most recent initiative: Online Research Supplemental Instruction.

Online Research S.I. is a curriculum-embedded research and learning strategies solution that is composed of a series of content modules for the Desire2Learn learning management system. Each module includes instructional webinars and activities that allow students to apply skills using their course’s major written assignment.

These modules assist students to engage in their own personal development to gain the skills and strategies required to better engage in the completion of their course requirements. As such, these modules are integrated into the course curriculum and students attain grades for completing the modules.

Content covered in this session will include a brief history of the modules, a demonstration of the modules, initial results from the most recent pilot phase, and comments and perspectives from one of the faculty members involved in the pilot phase.
