Since my operatic debut at the 1974 Stratford Festival, I have performed with many of North America’s finest orchestras (both modern and baroque) and with most of its choral organizations.
I have achieved wide and long-lasting recognition at major Bach and summer music festivals, performed oratorio and opera internationally, gained acclaim as a recitalist and recording artist, and taken the stage with Canada’s leading opera companies.
In 2014, I celebrated 40 years of singing for audiences around the world. I’ve taught singing at Wilfrid Laurier University since 1998, when I joined the Faculty of Music, and have since been honoured to receive frequent international invitations to teach and conduct masterclasses. Recent invitations have come from Baldwin-Wallace University Conservatory, near Cleveland, Ohio, from Tapei’s University for the Arts and the Music Department at Tunghai University in Taiwan. This summer I’m looking forward to returning to the 2016 Académie de Fourvière in Lyon, France where I’ve been a guest artist/teacher for the past three years.
Very recently, and for the first time in my career, I was honoured to serve as a member of an international Jury at the second annual Mozart Competition in Hagen, Germany. While in Germany, I also gave two performances of Schubert’s epic song cycle, Winterreise, with pianist Roland Pröll. I’m delighted to return to Germany in April of this year to participate in a Schubert lecture/recital for the Faculty of Music at the University of Osnabrück and other recitals in Bünde and Hagen.
Other highlights of this concert season for me include a performance of the title role in Elijah with the Grand Philharmonic Choir and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, a western Canada tour of Schubert’s Winterreise with my colleague, Professor Leslie De’Ath, with performances in Winnipeg, Victoria, Abottsford, Langley and Edmonton, and a return to the 109th annual Bach Festival in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
My teaching style is to offer my students a wholesome, sensible approach to beautiful singing that begins with what the student presents and continues with my response to them. That response has been informed first of all by a pedagogical philosophy and practice that has served me as a professional singer for 40 years, and secondly by what I've gleaned from the many fine artists and practitioners of "bel canto," as well as colleagues in the teaching profession with whom I've had the luxury of exchanging ideas about singing. My hope is to encourage a curiosity and love for the world of singing, as well as an appetite for learning and discovery that will never be sated.
