What are we: Dilettantes or Oases of Life?”
People at Laurier
My name is JoAnne Chung Yan Lam and I am in the Master of Divinity
program, seeking ordination with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Canada. I have served as one of the WLS Student Executive and it has
been a pleasure to have this opportunity to share a little of my
experience at WLS. My story is long-winded and complicated, but it
involves three countries, my academic wanderings from physics to
religious studies, and now, my third degree in theology. Despite the
twists and turns of my youthful years, WLS has become a significant
turning point in my career. Having attended two other theological
institutes, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary provides an unique culture and
atmosphere that distinctly establishes a conducive space for
'ministers-in-training." The faculty provide a balanced curriculum for
preparing us for ministry in the "real world," as well as a vision of
"church" beyond the steeple and the building. Concentrating on practical
matters such as worship, church administration, preaching, Christian
education, etc., each student is pushed to apply theory into realistic
scenarios that will not leave students anxious when called to parish
ministry. Since my "first contact" with the WLS faculty, I have been in awe with
the humility of each faculty member.
WLS presents an atmosphere of familial caring
that exceeds my expectations of any academic institution. I could not
imagine a better place to prepare for ministry and to challenge my
Christian and Lutheran identity. Theology is not only about reading the
writing of great theologians, but rather to live with inspirational
theologians who humbly guide us along, discerning our own faith journeys
and purpose in the world.
