Welcome to WLS

WLS announces new Centre for Worship and Global Song

Since 1985, there have been more Christians in churches of the Global South than in the more affluent countries of the Global North. We often are painfully aware of the challenges and suffering in these nations but there is a vibrancy to the worship and a dynamism to their hymnody that is a gift to the whole church. Waterloo Lutheran Seminary is pleased to announce the creation of the Centre for Worship and Global Song which may serve as a bridge across cultures and between churches to help share this gift.

My Story

Susan Climo

Dr. Robert A. Kelly is a native of Southern California who has been at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary since 1985 teaching Systematic Theology, Historical Theology, and Christian Ethics. Currently he is the Bishop William D. Huras Professor of Church History and Ecclesiology. When asked about his approach to teaching theology Bob says, "I want my students to join with me in becoming a community of theological deliberation, a community of convivial theologians who together through friendly and committed scholarly conversation explore the meaning of the Gospel for the lives of real people." That's a big challenge! Bob's classes are demanding, but there is often a surprise, a new insight that comes through engagement. Bob's current research involves preserving and editing nineteenth century theological works through the internet.

Public Lecture

Islam and Democracy: A Catholic Perspective on Reform and Renewal
Gregory Baum, PhD
Centre Justice et Foi and McGill University
Friday, February 12, 10:00AM to Noon
Keffer Chapel, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary

This lecture examines the work of Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss academic and Islamic scholar who has been referred to as today’s “Muslim Martin Luther.” From an interfaith perspective and drawing several parallels between Islamic and Catholic encounters with modernity, Baum compares the debates in the two traditions. He argues that reform and renewal are compatible with the substance of both Catholic and Muslim traditions.
This lecture is based on Prof. Baum’s latest book, The Theology of Tariq Ramadan: A Catholic Perspective. Copies will be available.
