its two-way wireless handheld, Blackberry? This book is designed to prepare students for dealing successfully with challenges posed by an increasingly competitive and time-responsive marketplace. This requires students to understand and accept that competing against the world's best requires a firm to use all its resources at their most effective. These resources must therefore be integrated and focused on how best to support the firm's competitive strategy.

We have therefore taken the viewpoint of the operating manager, not merely that of the technician, in developing this book. The operating manager in both manufacturing and service organizations must be capable of conducting and managing complex design, planning, and control activities. In addition, however, operating managers must be capable of making decisions, and that requires an ability to think strategically and to understand why and when to do something, not just how. Every manager should understand the impact of operations on corporate strategy and other elements in the value chain and how to integrate operations effectively into the corporation at all levels. Every manager should also have command of available quantitative tools and techniques. This book has been written and organized to reflect and integrate these two important trends.

We emphasize the context of the leading-edge firm we call the fast-response organization (FRO). An FRO is organized around six dimensions of competition, or competitive drivers:

  • Product quality
  • Total service support for products and for suppliers and customers
  • Product and process flexibility
  • The strategic use of time, especially as a value-added concept
  • Costs, primarily in a customer-oriented, net value sense
  • Dependability in honoring commitments in the marketplace

These drivers are an integral part of the philosophy underlying total quality management (TQM). The strategic implication of TQM philosophy is that FROs must use all their resources to the fullest, including the capabilities of all employees. This departure from traditional operations management approaches is a distinctive aspect of the book.

This collection of readings and cases has been assembled to bring a managerial perspective to new technology adoption and implementation. This book has been prepared to complement Managing the Dynamics of New Technology: Issues in Manufacturing Management. However, the book can also stand alone; it will support any general course in Operations Management or Engineering Management, a course focused on technology, or a course in General Management. The book is not a technical manual; it is intended to help generalist managers, not merely technical specialists, understand the process and the implications of new technology acquisition for the whole of the adopting organization. Subsequently, the perspective chosen for the readings and cases are not only global, but functionally broad. The material covers many issues from acquisition to implementation, and deals with matters of importance from the individual to the economy at large.

The book has been organized into twelve sections, beginning with general issues concerning the factory of the future. The other sections cover topics from characteristics and potential of new technology through a dynamic analysis of adopting new technology. The readings run, roughly, from fairly focused problems to broad managerial issues. The cases in all sections contain a variety of management concerns that need to be taken into account. The situation presented at the beginning of each chapter provides a brief description of a real case as experienced and resolved in real life. This is a very helpful starting point for individual and/or group analysis of the teaching cases. In addition, the epilogue provided after the readings in each chapter gives a sense of direction and focal point on the important issues that should be considered when reading and thinking through the cases.

The proceedings of the TECHNOLOGY CANADA Conference are comprised of the presentations and panel discussions of over 45 speakers from industry, government, labour organizations, and academia and is dedicated to the topic of Managing New Technology. This is a very timely focus as Canadian companies become increasingly involved with the acquisition and implementation of new technology. The factory-of-the-future is to integrate new information technology, management, organization, and production technology.

The proceedings are divided into eight sections of various topics with most sections starting with a summary of the papers prepared by the session's chairperson. At the end of each section, an extract of panel discussions which took place after presentations is also provided. This should give the reader a flavour of lively debates we had during the conference.
