A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis of Managerial Third-Party Conflict Intervention Strategies
P. Gregory Irving and John P. Meyer
Multidimensional scaling analysis was used to investigate the underlying dimensional structure of 21 third-party conflict management strategies derived from the literature. Whereas Elangovan's (1995) prescriptive model of managerial third-party dispute intervention included strategies that varied along the dimensions of process and outcome control, the present study identified two dimensions that were labelled Avoid versus Approach Conflict and Participative versus Autocratic. The implications of such a dimensional structure for Elangovan's model are discussed.
