Computer Science at Laurier 

A multidisciplinary department, Physics & Computer Science includes faculty members with backgrounds in computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics. Choose a traditional program such as Computer Science and Physics, or a more unique interdisciplinary program such as Computing & Computer Electronics and Photonics. 

The Honours BSc Computer Science gives students a solid understanding of the basic principles of computing. You will develop strong algorithm analysis and design skills in procedural, object-oriented and low-level languages with the optional introduction to functional and logical paradigms. In addition to these essential concepts, students gain necessary experience in group work, project administration and time management. Hands-on experience is key to a student’s understanding of computing fundamentals. Students can use the flexibility of the program to design their own specializations to meet their particular interests. 

Program highlights 

  • All programs have a common first year consisting of computer science, physics, mathematics, electronics and an elective, giving you the chance to try out different areas before deciding what to focus on.
  • No matter which program you choose, you’ll benefit from the smaller class sizes and the integrated laboratory component.
  • A background in computer science is useful, but not necessary. First-year computer science and physics will provide you with the knowledge you need to succeed. 
  • The recently introduced Honours BA Computer Science can be taken in combination with a second major, usually from the Faculty of Arts. The Honours BSc in Computer Science & Mathematics is especially powerful in scientific and financial computing to implement quantitative models in areas such as pharmaceutical design, image processing, financial analysis and genomics.

Careers

More than 90 per cent of Laurier computing graduates enter the workforce immediately upon graduation, while the remainder to on to graduate studies in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering.

Student experience 

0000Gillan.jpgIt was Laurier’s small size and atmosphere that drew Kevin Gillan to the Honours Computer Science & Computer Electronics program. “I know most people in my program, and I get to talk to my teachers and get to know them more than some of my friends at larger universities.”

Gillan was part of the Professional Experience Program (PEP) and was working for Sybase iAnywhere as a product support analyst before graduating from Laurier. “It gave me real world experience and allowed me to apply the knowledge I gained in my courses before I graduated.”

He also enjoyed being able to help others, which he did through tutoring and as an instructional assistant for several courses.

Alumni experience 

0000Sinclair.jpgThere were many factors that went into Ian Sinclair’s decision to attend Laurier, but ultimately it was the small class sizes and connection with his professors that he enjoyed most. “Each professor I had throughout university quickly knew the names of all the students within the start of any semester,” he says. “I always felt very connected to the classes and the content.” 

In addition to his computer science classes, Sinclair was interested in business and took several electives during his four years at Laurier. Upon graduation, he was hired by Research In Motion to work in its Network Operation Centre, where he was the only employee ever hired directly from university. Six months later he was promoted to BlackBerry Operations Administrator. 

“During my interview, it was noted that a key reason for even being considered was my education and experience in both computer science and business,” he says. “They were impressed by my technical experience, but my business sense and education made them believe I would have great potential to be a valuable asset.”
