PO 650 / GV 760 International Human Rights Fall 2012 Summary:
This course will focus on the international human rights regime as a component of international law and global governance. It will begin with a discussion of the meaning of human rights and how they have been institutionalized within the United Nations system and in international law. It will continue with investigation of the history of human rights, and discussion of the debate about cultural relativism and human rights, particularly as it applies to the rights of women. The relationship of human rights to globalization will then be considered. The last section of the course will investigate ways to rectify human rights violations, including the role civil society; laws pertaining to genocide and war crimes; and the role of human rights in foreign policy.
