Dr. Sofy Carayannopoulos is an associate professor of policy at the School of Business & Economics, at Wilfrid Laurier University. She currently teaches Introductory Business Strategy to classes of over 200 undergraduate students and a PhD course exploring the foundations of management thought in the Management PhD program. She holds an MBA and a PhD in strategy and entrepreneurship from the Schulich School of Business at York University, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce and Economics and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto.
Her research interests are in strategic management, entrepreneurship, and technology. More specifically, she examines knowledge resources, alliances and acquisitions, and the survivial and success of young technology firms. Her research has been presented at conferences such as the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Conference in North America, as well as various other conferences in Europe and Australia. Dr. Carayannopoulos' research has been published in Research Policy, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, and the International Journal of Knowledge, Culture and Change Management. Her cases have also been published in Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice and the North American Case Research Journal and presented at various North American conferences. They have received the Best Strategy Case Award at the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada Conference as well as the Curtis E. Tate Jr. Award - the North American Case Research Association's most prestigious award. Throughout her career Dr. Carayannopoulos has run and engaged in multiple teaching development workshops, addressing issues such as technological aids and writing cases. She contributes to a number of professional and university organizations including the Business Curriculum Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and the LCRE Board of Associates.
Dr. Carayannopoulos was invited to the position of Associate Director of the Laurier Centre for Research in Entrepreneurship (formerly the NeXt Centre) because of the strong overlap between the Centre's activities and her research and teaching interests. LCRE is a research centre that aspires to increase entrepreneurial awareness across the region of Waterloo, and provides local entrepreneurs with useful knowledge and research. She hopes her involvement in LCRE will help promote the activities of LCRE to non-Laurier constituents, expand LCRE's activities, and increase research available to local entrepreneurs.
