Keeping Desktop Software Up to Date



Disclaimer: The information in this section is provided as a service to the Laurier community and does not imply support for the software listed.

All members of the Laurier community should ensure that their Apple or Windows desktop and laptop systems are set to install automatic updates as issued by the vendor.

 In addition the ITS department advises that the following software packages have security issues and that software upgrades should be performed.

Apple OS 10.5 updates


1 Configure automatic updates

On the left top corner of your screen, click on the Apple icon, and choose System Preferences...(See screenshot).

In the System section, click the Software Update icon (See screenshot). 

In Software Update window, while Update Software is highlighted, check the box of Check for updates: and choose Daily from the drop box next to it (See screenshot).

Check the box of Download important updates in the background (See screenshot).

Click  the Check Now button (or Update Now in earlier Mac OS X versions).

If there are items in the Software Update window, select the items you want to install, then click Install.

Close Software Update window. 

2 Get MS Office update (For Apple users who use Microsoft Office)

Open any MS Office application, such as Word, or Excel, in the tool bar click on Help and choose Check for Updates. This brings up the Microsoft AutoUpdate window, follow the instructions to download and install MS Office updates.

 
MS Windows XP update


NOTE: The following instructions are for Windows XP Service Pack 3, if your system is not SP3 yet, please upgrade to SP3 first.

Click on Start at the left bottom corner, choose Control Panel (See screenshot).

In the Control Panel window find Security Center and open it (See screenshot).

In the Windows Security Center window,  open Automatic Updates under Manage security settings for: (See screenshot).

In the Automatic Updates window, click Automatic (recommended) radio button to turn on automatic update, then click Windows Update Web site link at the bottom if you have internet connected (See screenshot).

Click Express in the Microsoft Update window (See screenshot).

When update installation finishes, restart computer.

 
Adobe Acrobat Reader

Warning: Laurier users should not download "Google Toolbar" which comes packaged with many Adobe downloads. Google Toolbar conflicts with the operation of Banner. 

From Adobe Acrobat Reader tool bar, click Help, choose Check for updates, click Download and Install Updates, in pop windows with Adobe Acrobat must be shut down before installation begins., click Continue, choose Quit when installation finishes.

Adobe Flash Player

Warning: Laurier users should not download "Google Toolbar" which comes packaged with many Adobe downloads. Google Toolbar conflicts with the operation of Banner. 

To get latest version of Adobe Flash Player, click here.

 
FireFox

From Firefox tool bar, click on Help, choose Check for Updates... , if there are any updates available, click Download & Install Now, click Restart Firefox Now after installation finishes.

Quicktime

Windows

From Quicktime tool bar, click Help, choose Update Existing Software. In the pop up window check the box of Check for Update Automatically, then click Update Now. Follow the instructions to get new version of QuickTime Player or security patches.

Apple

Point to QuickTime Player on the left top corner, click on Update Existing Software, Software Update will list all the available new software to install on Mac, choose them and click Install # Items. # is the number of new software.

RealPlayer

From RealPlayer tool bar, click Tools, choose Check for updates--choose security related updates, click Install.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Open this link with your web browser:

Click the "Download" button next to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 15"


On the download page, review and accept the license agreement on the top, then click on the download link, entitled "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language"

Save the file named "jre-1-5_0_15-windows-i586-p.exe" to your computer, then execute it and follow the process.
