BSc Program

Financial mathematics programs, where they exist, are typically MSc programs offered through mathematics departments, with many of the students drawn from the sciences because of their analytical training. An article in the Toronto Star (Monday, October 15, 2001) discussed "econophysics", a name given to this area, illustrating the need for individuals with strong mathematics skills and with the ability to apply that knowledge in the financial sector. Science students will find their ability to solve problems in either the physical or the life sciences enhanced by their progression through this program. Students may arrange their elective credits so as to incorporate a secondary program in a specific discipline or, alternatively, to gain a broad exposure to the scientific disciplines at Laurier.

Required Courses

The Honours BSc Financial Mathematics program consists of a minimum of 20.0 credits, including at least 9.0 and no more than 13.0 senior Mathematics credits. The program shall include no more than 7.0 100 level credits and must include the following:

At least 1.5 credits from: CP114; both BI110 and BI111; both CH110 and CH111; both GL101 and GL102; both PC131 and PC132
2.0 approved senior non-mathematics science credits

Regulations and Notes

  1. Electives must include at least a 0.5 credit from Division A.
  2. For progression and for graduation, a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.00 in Mathematics and an overall GPA of 4.00 is required.
  3. EC260 and CP114 are recommended.
  4. Based on the results of the Calculus Placement Evaluation, an entering student may be advised to enroll in MA110*, rather than MA103, in Year 1; then MA104 would be completed in Fall term of Year 2 and MA215 in Fall term of Year 3, in place of the 0.5 non-BU elective. Hence, students who have credit for MA110* require only 1.0 non-BU elective credits.
