All qualified students meeting the current "scholarship" standard for the academic unit are automatically considered. Application is not required. A scholarship is awarded on academic merit, not financial need. WLU Graduate Scholarships have a minimum value of $1,000 and are tenable for study at WLU while enrolled as a full-time student completing coursework and/or research. Normally, scholarships are paid in three equal instalments over three terms. Students awarded a WLU scholarship must sign and agree to abide by the terms indicated on the Graduate Scholarship Contract form.
All WLU Graduate Scholarships are conditional on registering as a
full-time graduate student and on maintaining a full-time courseload, as defined
by the department, during the term in which the scholarhsip is held.
Scholarships
are awarded for registration in the program indicated on the offer, and

Business Office, a credit balance will be refunded by direct deposit, no
earlier than one week following the last day for a late registration
for the term.
Students who withdraw from the program during the
term will be required to repay a pro-rated portion of their graduate
scholarship.
Laurier Graduate Scholarships may not normally be

This Scholarship, coupled with a Teaching Assistantship, comprises a maximum $12,000 top-up funding package to such eligible students (held in addition to the external award, renewable each year such an award is held).

The primary purposes of a Graduate Studentship is to further the student's education and training as s/he pursues a graduate degree. The funding is typically from a faculty research grant/contract. The funding researcher is a mentor and the student is expected to make an intellectual contribution to the research, which may be a component of the faculty member's research. The research undertaken is directly related to the student's own academic pursuits, and the activities will include all those necessary to learn to become an independent researcher.
The Student Support from Faculty Research Grant/Contract form required to initiate payment (for one or more full terms) to the student from a faculty research grant/contract may be found under "Forms" on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.
A core competency of the PhD degree is the ability to carry out independent, high quality research. Socialization to a discipline and a community of scholars aids in the development of this competency. A high impact practice for teaching and advising doctoral students requires helping students to make the connection between their focused area of interest and the larger academy. Networks are built and curriculum vitae strengthened through engagement with other scholars beyond the confines of one university campus.
Nominations are invited from doctoral advisors and the selection is made by the Graduate Awards Committee.
Recipients may use the award ($1250) to travel to scholarly conferences for the purposes of research presentation or for travel opportunities for advanced research training (e.g., workshops on statistical methods; access to special archives, equipment, collections, fieldwork; international practica).
Students who receive these funds will be expected to participate in the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition where they will be asked to give a three minute presentation.
Nominations are due to Rosemary Springett by December 17, 2012 and must reflect travel/conference participation/advanced research training prior to August 2013.
The Office of Student Awards manages award competitions for various internal and endowed awards. Consult the Student Awards website for information concerning scholarships, eligibility and application requirements and deadlines.
Laurier's bursary program is for students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents (a limited budget for bursary assistance is available for students studying at Laurier on a study permit). Applications are due by November 1 annually in the Student Awards Office. Bursaries do not have to be paid back to the university. Students may only receive one bursary assessment per academic year, to an established maximum amount. Consult the Student Awards website for information concerning bursaries, eligibility and application requirements and deadlines.
