Registration

Academic Year 2012-2013

LORIS is open as of 6 p.m. on Wednesday May 15 to select courses.

The Laurier On-Line Registration Information System (LORIS) provides access to your student profile, your academic record and allows you to register for courses. Consult the LORIS system regularly to review your information. Go to http://telaris.wlu.ca.

COURSE REGISTRATION

Graduate students may register for courses for the fall 2012, winter 2013 and spring 2013 academic terms using the LORIS system. You may add or drop courses 7 days a weeks, 24 hours a day.

Late registration fees apply; consult the deadlines below.  Penalties resulting from late registration are calculated and applied systematically.  The Business Office cannot make any changes or remove these charges.  Should a student wish to dispute a penalty charge resulting from registration, please contact the Registrar's Office to submit a late registration fee appeal to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Information for NEW students

This information is for students who are entering the first term of a graduate program at Laurier with no previous registration at the university in a graduate program. Only applicants who have received and accepted a FINAL or FINAL PROBATIONARY Offer of Admission may register for courses. Applicants who have received a CONDITIONAL Offer of Admission must fulfill the conditional requirements on the Offer before access to the LORIS system will be allowed. Registration will continue throughout the summer months.

Information for RETURNING students

This information is for students who are continuing in a graduate program, including those students who were on a leave of absence or were temporarily withdrawn from studies during the last academic year. Students who had no registrarial activity in the academic terms fall 2011, winter 2012 or spring 2012 must indicate their intention to return by contacting the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office. Graduate students needing to register in comprehensive courses, Major Research Paper (MRP) courses or thesis courses will require departmental approval. If you attempt to register in these courses prior to receiving department approval, you will receive an error message. You must consult your program's Graduate Co-ordinator for approval to register. When approval is granted, you must re-enter LORIS and register for the course.

Preparation for registration

The online registration process works effectively when you prepare in advance. You are strongly encouraged to review the requirements of your academic program, course descriptions and class schedules before entering LORIS to register for courses. Program requirements and course descriptions are published in the Graduate Calendar. Questions concerning program requirements should be directed to your Graduate Co-ordinator. Most departments publish course schedules online.

Joint Programs

Note that only courses in Laurier's Graduate Calendar are available on LORIS. Students in some joint programs (Ancient Mediterranean Cultures, History and Religious Studies)  will be required to complete and submit the Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Program form to register for courses at other institutions. Students in joint programs may register for Laurier courses using LORIS.

Courses available to students in the joint graduate program in geography are available on LORIS and the OVGS form is not required.

MBA Students

Students registered in an MBA program at the Waterloo campus will be restricted by LORIS to courses taught at this location. Similarly, students registered in an MBA Toronto program will be restricted to courses taught at the St Andrew's Club and Conference Centre in Toronto.

Directed Studies

Registration in directed studies courses is not available through LORIS. Students wanting to register in directed studies courses must contact the appropriate Graduate Co-ordinator.

How to register for courses online

Graduate students are required to register for the fall 2012, winter 2013 and spring 2013 terms. You may register for courses for all three semesters at this time or you may choose to register for the spring semester at a later time (be mindful of the deadline date to avoid a late registration fee). Consult the online Academic Schedule 2012/2013 for information on significant dates related to course registration (eg, the final day to add or drop courses for a specific term).

It is your responsibility to register for courses appropriate to your academic program. The LORIS system will block your registration in courses for which you are not eligible to register. This may occur because the course is beyond the requirements for your chosen program, the course requires a prerequisite that you have not yet completed or the course requires departmental approval. LORIS will let you register in a course for the winter semester even if you do not have the correct prerequisite because it expects you will select the prerequisite for completion in the fall semester at a later time. However, if you do not register in the prerequisite, LORIS may eventually remove you from the winter course. The university may remove you at any time from any course in which you have registered contrary to official regulations. For example, if you register in more courses than allowed, in courses for which you have exclusions, in courses for which you lack prerequisites or in courses which are inappropriate due to any other university regulation, the university may remove you, even after classes have begun. Nevertheless, it is your responsibility to select the appropriate courses. The university does not guarantee your errors will be corrected before classes begin.

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO REGISTER:

Go to http://telaris.wlu.ca Go to print version of these instructions (.pdf)

LORIS Identification and PIN:

Your LORIS User ID is your 9 digit Laurier ID number. Your default PIN number is your date of birth, in the following format - MMDDYY. When you enter LORIS for the first time, you will be prompted to create a new PIN number. Your new PIN must be six numerals in length and can not begin with 0 (zero). At this time, you will also be prompted to create a security question.

Students who incorrectly enter their PIN three times are locked out of Loris.  To have a PIN reset, click here: <https://web.wlu.ca/pinreset/>. Note that it takes 24 hours for the PIN to be reset.

Course Registration:

  • From the Main Menu, click on "Student Services".
  • From the Student Services Menu, Click on "Registration".
  • You will use the Registration Menu to select an academic term for registration, to register for classes, to remove classes from your schedule and to print your class schedule. You must register for classes by academic term.

  • Click on "Class Search" at the bottom of the screen.
  • All courses (undergraduate, if available, and graduate) in your chosen subject area will be displayed. The courses are sorted by course number (column 4), starting with first-year undergraduate courses, if available, and ending with graduate courses.
  • The relevant header definitions are as follows:
  • Select: click in this box to indicate your desire to register in this course.
  • CRN: "Course Registration Number" - do not confuse this number with the Course Number (below); the CRN number is only used by LORIS to track your registration.
  • Subj: the subject code.
  • Crse: the standard Course Number used in the Graduate Calendar; this list is sorted by this column.
  • Sec: the section letter.
  • Cmp: the campus designation; W = "Waterloo Campus" (including Social Work courses taught at the new St Jerome's Campus); T = "Toronto" (MBA Toronto program).
  • Cred: the credit weight.
  • Title: the name of the course.

  • Location: the building and room in which the course will be taught, if applicable.

  • Click on the Select box next to each course you wish to register in.
  • Go to the very bottom of the screen and click on "Register".

The courses you selected will now appear on the "Add or Drop Classes" screen under a section entitled "Current Schedule". Those courses in which you are allowed to register are listed first, sorted by course number. Those courses for which you have been denied registration access (if applicable) will be listed next under a section entitled "Registration Add Errors". Again, if you are refused permission to register in a course, the course may be outside your course requirements, it may have a prerequisite which has not yet been completed, it may be a duplicate course of one in which you are already registered or the course may require departmental permission (eg, a major research paper or thesis course). Consult your Graduate Co-ordinator if you are refused permission to register in a specific course.

To drop a course previously added to your "Current Schedule", click on the down arrow in the "Action" column next to the course you wish to drop. Highlight "Drop Course - Web" and then click on the "Submit Changes" button at the very bottom of the screen.

Continue to add or drop classes from this screen until you are satisfied with your schedule for the fall semester. When your fall schedule is complete, click on "RETURN TO MENU" at the top right of the screen. This will take you back to the Registration Menu. Repeat these steps for the winter 2013 semester and the spring 2013 semesters.

Printing your schedule

When you complete your registration and are satisfied with your course selection, it is your responsibility to print a copy of your schedule. You will not receive a copy of your schedule from the Registrar's Office. Go to the Main Menu and click on Student Services - Registration - Student Detail Schedule - Select Term and Submit. Your schedule for the selected term will be displayed, including the times and locations of your classes, the dates and the instructor's name. Print this schedule for your records. Courses, room locations and times are subject to change; consult the staff person in your academic department prior to the start of classes in September for any changes.

Assistance with registration

A reminder about communications

You are reminded that email is one of the official means by which the university will communicate with you. Every Laurier student is issued an email address at initial registration. The standard format for this address is the first four letters of your last name and the last four digits of your Laurier ID number (eg, smit1111@mylaurier.ca). Official communications from the university will be forwarded to this address. You must be prepared to access the mailbox at this address. Consult the Information Technology Web site for information how to access your Laurier email account. You can also contact the Student Service Desk for information on all computing services at Laurier; the Help Desk can be reached by phone at (519) 884-0710 ext 2222.

Frequently asked questions

I'm trying to log in and my PIN is not working. What should I do?

Have your PIN reset online <https://web.wlu.ca/pinreset/>. Your default PIN number is your date of birth, in the following format - MMDDYY. When you enter LORIS for the first time, you will be prompted to create a new PIN number. Your new PIN must be six numerals in length and can not begin with 0 (zero). At this time, you will also be prompted to create a security question. If you experience problems entering LORIS, contact the Registrar's Office at (519) 884-0710 ext 2764 or 2655.

I'm in a joint program and can't find some of my courses in LORIS. Why?

LORIS only lists courses which appear in the WLU Graduate Calendar.  Registration in courses taught at other institutions is not available through LORIS. You need to complete and submit the Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Application, available from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Web site, to register for courses taught at other institutions.

I get an error message when I try to register in certain courses. Why?

The LORIS system will block your registration in courses for which you are not eligible to register. This may occur because the course is beyond the requirements for your chosen program, the course requires a prerequisite that you have not yet completed or the course requires departmental approval (such as a major research paper or thesis course). When you are denied registration in a course in which you need to register, contact your Graduate Co-ordinator.

I'm in the MBA program and am unable to register in certain business courses. Why?

Students registered in an MBA program at the Waterloo campus are restricted by LORIS to courses taught at this location. Similarly, students registered in an MBA Toronto program are restricted to courses taught at the St Andrew's Club and Conference and Centre in Toronto. When you execute a class search for the subject business, the location of the course is listed in the field "Cmp"; "W" indicates the Waterloo campus; "T" indicates the Toronto campus. Ensure you are registering in courses at the correct location.
