Higher Education in Canada
Post-secondary education falls under the jurisdiction of the provincial governments in Canada and publicly-funded institutions require legislative approval from the provincial government to grant degrees. The Wilfrid Laurier University Act, 1973, is the legislation passed by the Ontario provincial government approving Wilfrid Laurier University as a degree-granting institution.
Additionally, universities in Canada strive to attain membership with the Association of Universities and Colleges (AUCC) (Laurier is a member of the AUCC). In order to be a member of AUCC, certain criteria must be met. For more information, see AUCC.
