Employment Earnings

Graduate Teaching Assistantship
A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) assists academic units in the teaching mission. A GTA provides assistance to faculty with the teaching responsibilities, and a graduate student employed as a GTA receives valuable teaching experience >>>

Research Assistantship
A Graduate student may be employed as a Research Assistant by a faculty member. This position is typically funded by a faculty member’s research grant, and the tasks are formally prescribed, assigned and completed on a fixed schedule >>>

Contract Academic Staff (CAS) Appointments
Depending on the qualifications and selection processes as outlined in the WLUFA Collective Agreement, some graduate students may receive a Contract Academic Staff (CAS) appointment to teach a course. Consult your academic unit for more information.

 
Internal (Laurier) Funding and Awards

Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Scholarship
Awarded on a competitive basis to full-time entering or continuing graduate students who achieve high academic standing in their program. All qualified students meeting the current "scholarship" standard for the academic unit are automatically considered >>>

Dean's Graduate Scholarship
Awarded to students in research-intensive master's programs who hold a major external award (i.e., CIHR, NSERC, OGS or SSHRC) >>>

Graduate Incentive Scholarship
Awarded to students entering graduate studies who are successful in major external scholarship competitions (e.g., OGS, NSERC, SSHRC). No application is required >>>

SBE Graduate Scholarship
Available to students enrolled in the PhD in Management Program in the School of Business and Economics. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to full-time entering or continuing graduate students who achieve high academic standing in their field >>>

Graduate Studentship
The primary purposes of a Graduate Studentship is to further the student's education and training as s/he pursues a graduate degree. The funding is typically from a faculty research grant/contract. If granted, the Student Support from Faculty Research Grant/Contract form required to initiate payment >>>

Travel and Research Award
Recipients may use the award to travel to scholarly conferences for the purposes of research presentation or for travel opportunities for advanced research training (e.g., workshops on statistical methods; access to special archives, equipment, collections, fieldwork; international practica).  Nominations must be submitted by the doctoral advisor (or program graduate co-ordinator if the advisor has not yet been identified) >>>

Travel Support for Conference Presentation
Laurier encourages students to engage in scholarly activity by providing financial support to students who make presentations at academic conferences related to their program of study at WLU. Funding from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS) is unlikely to cover all such expenses and students are encouraged to seek additional funding from their advisors, departments, and/or Faculties >>>

Bursaries and Assistance based on Financial Need

Endowed and Annual Awards
The Office of Student Awards manages award competitions for various internal and endowed awards. Consult the Student Awards website for information concerning scholarships, eligibility and application requirements and deadlines >>>

Parental Leave Supplement for Doctoral Students
The supplement will be available to doctoral students who take a temporary leave from graduate studies to become the primary care giver of a child after a birth or adoption >>>
