Social Insurance Number (SIN)

All students, including international students, who work on- or off-campus and/or receive scholarship funds from the university are required to obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and provide this number to the university. You will not get paid or receive money from the university without a Social Insurance Number.

Application forms are available from the local office of Service Canada or can be downloaded from their website. You do not have to pay a fee when you apply for a Social Insurance Number card for the first time. Visit them in person at:

SIN Information for International Students

If you are an international student studying at Laurier on a study permit, the same immigration requirements that apply to you also apply to your spouse and dependents. Your spouse will get a visitor record and may work in Canada as long as your study permit is valid. Therefore, your spouse may also apply for an Employment Authorization. Note that your spouse or dependents may not attend school or work without the permission of the Citizenship and Immigration Office. You must provide the following documents when applying for a SIN:

  • a SIN application form;
  • a valid Study Permit/Student Authorization;
  • a letter from the university verifying that you are an international full-time student;
  • a contract of employment from the university or from your employer on campus.

Consult the Service Canada website for complete information of this process.
