Advising of PhD Students

Guidelines
  • The coursework period - academic terms 1-4
During this period questions about courses, regulations, procedures and options tend to predominate and the PhD Coordinator is in the best position to provide appropriate advice. If students wish to discuss substantive issues in a subject or research area, they should feel free to approach any member of faculty or staff who they think might be helpful.
  • The comprehensive requirement period - academic terms 5-7
Once a comprehensive committee has been formed the advisor of that committee will be most appropriate as the primary advisor for the comprehensive paper. The PhD Coordinator continues to be most appropriate to consult with on questions of policy and procedure.
  • The candidacy period - time between completion of comprehensive and completion of dissertation.
During this period the dissertation advisor is the key person to provide appropriate advice pertaining to the dissertation. The PhD Coordinator continues to be most appropriate to consult on questions of policy and procedure.
