Canadian Red Cross Lecture on the Famine in the Horn of Africa - Sept. 21, 2011

The Tshepo Institute for the Study of Contemporary Africa (TISCA) at Laurier Brantford is pleased to announce a public lecture by Perez Oyugi of the Canadian Red Cross  on the famine in Africa. The lecture will be held on Wednesday, September 21, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:50 p.m. in room RCW 202.

The presentation will address the role of institutions in supporting vulnerable communities when markets are absent, with special emphasis on the activities of the Red Cross in the Horn of Africa and why support is urgently needed right now. The Tshepo Insitute believes that a greater awareness of the situation will lead to greater assistance to the Red Cross to help the nearly 11 million people affected by the situation in the Horn of Africa.

Perez Oyugi serves as an associate director (International, Youth and RespectED) with the Canadian Red Cross Society, providing support to International Operations during disaster response activities. She also oversees humanitarian issues in education, youth engagement, and refugee protection in Ontario. Oyugi holds a MEd, and is presently pursuing a Ph.D. at Brock University in educational leadership and policy studies.

The Tshepo Institute for the Study of Contemporary Africa is a research centre based at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford Campus. Anyone wishing to make contributions toward the famine relief efforts in Africa is asked to do so directly to the Canadian Red Cross Society. The Tshepo Institute cordially invites all to attend.
