7 to 9 p.m. | CIGI Campus Auditorium | 67 Erb Street West, Waterloo | This is a free event, but registration is required as space is limited.

The Easton-McCarney Memorial Lecture is made possible by generous donations to the Easton-McCarney Memorial Fund. The event is held in memory of John Easton and Christoper McCarney, two students who were killed in a tragic car accident in December 1972 after completing their first term in the MSW program.

The guest speaker, Dr. Michael Ungar, is also a graduate of Laurier's social work program, receiving his PhD in 1995. Today he is a family therapist and professor of social work at Dalhousie University in Halifax where he co-directs the Resilience Research Centre that coordinates more than $5 million in funded research in over a dozen countries.

His lecture, Too Safe for Their Own Good: How Risk and Responsibility Help Children and Teens Thrive, will focus on how to offer children and teenagers the right amount of risk and responsibility. He will share what he has learned from families who have found ways to provide their children with the "risk-takers advantage," helping them grow up to be competent, caring contributors to their families, schools and communities.

Free parking is available after 5:30 p.m. at the rear of the CIGI campus, accessible from Father David Bauer Drive. However, if you are staying at the Delta Waterloo, it is an easy walk across the street to the CIGI campus.
