Sue Weare named 2012 Graduate Honour Award Recipient

At the Social Work Week luncheon on March 5, the Faculty of Social Work presented the 2012 Graduate Honour Award to Sue Weare. A graduate of the MSW program in 2011, Sue is now a Strategic Planning Associate at the City of Kitchener, where she focuses on diversity, inclusion, community safety and crime prevention. She is also an incredibly active volunteer. As the Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the Waterloo Region Rainbow Coalition, Sue works to build and strengthen community partnerships and raise the visibility of the LGBTQ community. She has helped organize a series of community dialogues, is part of an anti-bullying action group that is partnering with both local school boards and recently agreed to represent the LGBTQ community on the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council. Sue is currently most excited about her work in facilitating a group of community members whose dream is to create a bricks-and-mortar centre that the local LGBTQ community can call home.

Sue was nominated by Social Work professor Dr. Ginette Lafrenière who felt that Sue deserved to be recognized for her "tireless work in the area of diversity at the City of Kitchener and for making incredible inroads for the Rainbow Coalition." Ginette also says that Sue "is a role model for young students, particularly coming from sexually diverse communities. Sue is brave and strong and articulate and funny."

Congratulations Sue on this well-deserved recognition of your work.
