Graduate Bursaries

DEFINITION: a bursary is a monetary gift based on demonstrated financial need and satisfactory academic achievement. Bursaries do not have to be paid back to the university.
Laurier Donor Supported Bursary Program

Bursary assistance is granted based on financial need, and we have a number of bursaries which have been created and supported by the generosity of donors.  There are bursary opportunities available to both full and part time students, as well as graduate and undergraduate students.  The description online on the Student Awards Search Engine  indicates the specific criteria for each opportunity (it is not possible to meet the eligibility criteria for all available donor supported bursary opportunities).

Applications will be available online on LORIS, through the completion of the online general student profile (Faculty specific profiles to follow) that will be available starting in early September. The deadline to submit the General profile is September 30th, 2014, 11:59 pm (for students attending classes at WLU in the 2014/2015 academic year (September 2014 through August 2015).

FUNDING FOR BURSARY ASSISTANCE:

When you apply for Laurier tuition bursary assistance, you will be assessed for the maximum amount of available bursary funding through this program. This bursary assistance is made available from tuition set aside funds. In addition, eligible students will be considered for funding from the Student Access Guarantee (see below). Funding eligibility for the Student Access Guarantee is determined based on an OSAP assessment, and no additional application is required in order to receive Student Access Guarantee funding, it is granted automatically once a bursary application is received, and eligibility is determined through the OSAP program. It is possible to receive bursary assistance from each of these sources.

For general graduate tuition bursary assistance, you will be assessed based on your income and expenses for the applicable study period.

Student Access Guarantee: The Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU) and Ontario's provincially assisted universities and colleges are partnering to support access to postsecondary education. In March of 2006, the Ministry ended a two-year tuition freeze and announced a new Tuition Framework starting in the Fall 2006. Postsecondary institutions are required to participate in the Student Access Guarantee (SAG) that states "no qualified Ontario student should be prevented from attending Ontario's public colleges and universities due to lack of financial support programs. Students should have access to the resources they need for their tuition and books and mandatory fees when these are above the usual range of costs covered by OSAP".

Graduate Bursary Information for MBA Co-op Students

Bursary assistance is available for graduate students in a full time program in the fall (and if applicable, spring term only). Applications are available online on LORIS in early September.  Bursary assistance for full time graduate students in classes for the fall term only can be submitted at any time before the application deadline, and will be assessed and granted bursary assistance (if applicable) later in the fall term.  Spring term bursary assistance will be granted by June 2014.

Graduate students in an approved full time program are eligible to apply for bursary assistance for each term they are in classes (not while on a work term placement)

1).  Applications for students in the co-op program or who are in school for the fall and spring terms, but not the winter term will be  available online in early September 2014.

2).  One term bursary applications (Fall 2014 only) will be processed late in the fall term, all other bursary applications will be processed after the January 19, 2015 deadline; spring term assessments will be done by mid June, 2015.

3). One completed student budget form is required for each academic year.  This form is included in the online student profile(s), as well as the tuition bursary application (it can only be completed once, therefore if it is completed with the student profile, by the mid October deadline, it does not need to be re-submitted for the bursary program when it opens in November).

4).  IMPORTANT NOTE: all graduate students are required to complete an OSAP application for the terms that they are in school full time.  This is a mandatory requirement of our general bursary program, and further details on this requirement can be found online (certain limited exceptions apply).

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS October 3rd, 2014.

Applications are available on LORIS in early September.

International (VISA) Graduate Bursary Assistance

Bursary assistance for international graduate students is only available during the fall and winter terms; due to extremely limited funding, no bursary assistance is available during the spring and summer terms.

Note that the amount of financial assistance available through these bursaries is very small in relation to the total cost of full-time attendance at university. International students must have adequate resources to finance their education apart from any assistance provided by the university. Basic living and education costs are to be met by the student or their sponsor.

Applications for these bursaries will be accepted only after registration at Laurier and the commencement of classes.

The application form for bursary assistance for the 2014/2015 academic year will be available online on LORIS by November 3rd, 2014, and the deadline is January 19, 2015, 11:59 pm.

Applications are not assessed until after the deadline date. Allocations made under this program will be applied directly to your account with the Business Office as of March 2015. Note that if you are granted a bursary, it will not be applied to your account before tuition for the winter term is due; you are responsible for payment of any late fees. You will be assessed based on your income and expenses for the period September to April (8 months). Bursary assistance is not available during the spring and summer terms. NOTE: an online student budget form is required for the current academic year, and is inlcuded in the application.

Deadline: 11:59 pm, January 19, 2015, 11:59 pm (no exceptions)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • proven financial need
  • full-time registration in a graduate program
  • satisfactory academic achievement
  • valid international student visa
  • The online application must be submitted by the stated deadline. All sections of the online form must be completed.

Aboriginal Post Secondary Education and Training Bursary

The Aboriginal Post Secondary Education and Training (PSET) Bursary is funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

DEADLINE: January 19, 2015, 11:59 pm

For all students who completed this question on the general student profile (deadline September 30, 2014), the application for this bursary will be listed on their account on LORIS as of November 3, 2014.  Under the Student Awards/Financial Aid tab, click on "View My Applications" to access this form after November 3, 2014.

If the application is not listed on your account on LORIS, e-mail the Student Awards Office (studentawards@wlu.ca) to request consideration for this program. E-mail requests to add this application can be accepted starting November 3, 2014, and can be accepted until 4:30 pm on Friday January 16, 2015.

Recipients will be notified by e-mail, to the WLU e-mail account, by late February 2015.

All full and part time graduate and undergraduate students who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for a PSET bursary, and are NOT required to complete an OSAP application for the PSET bursary program.  An online student budget form is required for this program, and this is included in both the online student profile(s) that are available from early September to mid October, as well as through the PSET Bursary Application.  Only one student budget form is required for the current academic year, therefore if you complete the student budget component of the online student profile, you are not required to submit an additional budget form for the PSET bursary program.

The Aboriginal Post Secondary Education and Training (PSET) bursary program requires a separate application from the Laurier general Tuition Bursary program.  Eligible students may receive a Laurier general Tuition Bursary, a First Generation bursary, as well as a PSET bursary.  The amount of PSET Bursary funding granted per student ranges in value between $1,000 and $3,500.
