Insurance Benefits
The University provides all eligible full-time employees with the following benefits. Please see your respective collective agreement to determine your eligibility.
Basic Life Insurance
Coverage amount: 1.5x an employee's annual salary.
Premiums: 100% University paid ($0.183 per $1,000 of coverage, plus 8% Retail Sales Tax) and are considered a taxable benefit for employees.

Voluntary/Optional Life Insurance
Voluntary/Optional Life Insurance benefits are an optional benefit and are subject to the insurance provider's approval. To apply for Voluntary/Optional Life Insurance coverage, please submit an Evidence of Insurability Form directly to the insurance provider (address listed on the form) and a Beneficiary Designation Form to Human Resources to keep on file. You will be notified once your coverage has been approved.
Coverage amount: Maximum $500,000 (in increments of $10,000)
Premiums: 100% employee paid
You are responsible for the payment of the monthly premiums (plus 8% Retail Sales Tax). The premium rates per $1,000 of benefit are:

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D)
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance provides coverage for certain perils outlined in our policy that occur as a result of an accident. To add Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage, please submit a Benefits Enrollment/Change Form to Human Resources outlining the amount of coverage you would like to purchase, and beneficiary information.
Coverage amount: Maximum $450,000 (in increments of $10,000)
Premiums: 100% employee paid. The monthly premium is $0.02 per $1,000 of coverage (plus 8% Retail Sales Tax).

Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD)
In the event that you are unable to perform the duties of your job for an extended period of time, Long Term Disability provides you with salary continuance during this period. Employees have 31 days from their hire date to enrol in the Long Term Disability insurance. Employee's can still enrol at a later date, with coverage subject to the insurance provider's approval.
Coverage amount: 60% of the first $1,250 of basic monthly earnings plus 50% of the next $18,500 of basic monthly earnings (not to exceed the maximum monthly benefit of $10,000).
Premium: 100% Employee Paid. The monthly premium is $2.01 per $100 of monthly benefit (plus 8% Retail Sales Tax). This is a non-taxable benefit.
Employees with LTD coverage are also eligble for the following programs offered through RBC:
- Best Doctors - whether you need to confirm a diagnosis, identify the latest treatments, or find a doctor with expertise in your illness or injury, Best Doctors can connect you with the right medical care, when you need it most.
- Work-Life Employee Assistance Program - This program provides for counselling services (in addition to Laurier's EAP program).
