Statement on Freedom of Expression
A panel discussion entitled "Strengthening Our Resolve: Movement
Building and Ongoing Resistance to the G20 Agenda" took place Sept. 15,
2010 at Laurier’s Faculty of Social Work. The subsequent arrest of one
of the panel members for reasons related to previously imposed bail
conditions has given rise to considerable discussion about freedom of
expression.
At Wilfrid Laurier University we support academic freedom and respectful freedom of expression. The university's vision statement indicates that our commitment is to justice and sustainability now and in the future, so we strive to ignite the minds, spirits and hearts of our communities through excellence in teaching and learning, in the discovery, scholarly exploration, and application of new ideas, and in instilling the courage to engage and challenge the world in all its complexity.
Our mission statement reinforces the vision statement. In addition to indicating that Wilfrid Laurier University is devoted to excellence in learning, research, scholarship and creativity it also states that the university challenges people to become engaged and aware citizens of an increasingly complex world. It fulfills its mission by advancing knowledge, supporting and enhancing high-quality undergraduate, graduate and professional education, and emphasizing co-curricular development of the whole student.
