Leaders & Key Players

SP288*: Study Abroad is a student-centred learning experience supported by teamwork and cultural sensitivity. The field course is led by a Director & Supervising Professor who is assisted in the host country by several key players such as the Study Abroad Assistant, Student Officer, and Senior International Liaison and back home by Student Ambassadors. Their duties and responsibilities are described below.

Director & Supervising Professor. The director oversees the operation and organization of SP288 and is responsible for ensuring a superior immersion experience abroad. He/she negotiates and customizes the study abroad program and academic content with the Senior International Liaison and administers the financial accounts. The director accompanies the SP288 group on all excursions and day trips, supervises the assistants, and is available for consultation during the entire experience abroad.

Study Abroad Assistant. The study abroad assistant helps with all issues related to student affairs and ensures student safety, satisfaction, and support. He/she provides guidance and assistance to students with health and safety issues, risk management, host families, travel insurance, and other issues approved by the director. The study abroad assistant accompanies the SP288 group on all excursions and day trips and is available for consultation during the entire experience abroad.

Student Officer. The student officer is a representative from among the participating students who may be called upon while abroad to help the program leaders with logistic, clerical, or emergency matters, along with other tasks approved by the director.

Senior International Liaison. The senior international liaison is the director of the host institution abroad and thus serves as the official link between the partner institution and SP288. He/she works closely with the SP288 program leaders to ensure a safe and successful learning experience. He/she is available for consulation during the entire experience abroad.

Student Ambassadors. Student ambassadors serve as experienced spokespersons back home who have previously participated in SP288. During the information period before the interest form deadline, the student ambassadors help to promote SP288 among students at Laurier  through marketing and active recruitment (e.g., visiting classes, spreading the word, being available to meet with interested students, etc.).
