STARTING SSB - SELF-SERVE BANNER (LORIS)

http://telaris.wlu.ca
The SCT Banner Self-Service products are designed to enhance end-user access to information on record in our SCT Banner database. SCT Self-Service enables our institution to deliver optimal customer service to students, employees, faculty, and alumni using the convenience, speed and affordable technology of the World Wide Web. For example: Students can now register for courses on-line. Faculty can use LORIS to enter grades and check their research accounts. Employees can view their personal, payroll, tax, and position information.

Printing to a Networked Printer

Enter the 7 character job name in the ‘Direct Access' field, or go directly to the job submission form GJAPCTL. Navigate to the Printer Control field block and enter your Networked printer name. You can press F9 to show a listing of all valid networked printers within Banner and select the printer in your department.
Navigate through the remaining blocks and fields and save your parameter values. Click on the Save button in the Toolbar menu to run the job. Your file will be printed to the networked printer you indicated

PRINTING TO THE DATABASE

In the Printer Control field, enter "DATABASE" instead of a networked printer. This will create a listing file that you can view on-line. To view this listing file, select "Options" from the toolbar, and then select - Review Output [GJIREVO]. Click on the arrow down button beside the Process window. A second screen will show a listing of processes that you have saved. Select the process listing file (ending in .lis) you would like to view and press the OK button. You may now print the file, by selecting "Options" from the toolbar, then selecting "Save and Print" which will prompt you to open the file in a browser and you can print from the browser or choose File - Save As option and save the file as a .txt file in a directory on your PC where you can open it with Word or Wordperfect.

DATA EXTRACT

You can extract data from Banner forms to a spreadsheet. The extract feature will work on all validation forms and most rule, application and inquiry forms that have been tested in each module. Before you try to use this feature, ensure that you have the correct settings for your web browser:

From your Control Panel go to,

Internet Options/Properties
          Advanced tab
UNCHECK the box - Do not save encrypted pages to disk.
(found under the Security subgroup)

Select Apply and then close.

Windows XP
• Select an option from the pop-up window to Open the file or Save it.
• The file will open in the new browser window, but in the Excel format.

XSHELL

Xshell software will be replacing QVT/TERM to access OMNIS. Users who currently access OMNIS for Banner related processes will now need to have the XSHELL software installed on their PC's. Please place a call ticket through the ITS Customer Service Portal. Click here for Instructions on how to configure and use XSHELL.

Using Xshell - For the first time to log into OMNIS / GENESIS / TELARIS

When you try to connect to one of the three servers for the first time on or after October 24th 2005, you will get a message similiar to the following....

$ ssh omnis
The authenticity of host 'omnis (205.189.21.94)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is 54:73:29:6c:69:ee:1d:27:76:8d:0a:0f:e0:4c:59:1f.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?

Please answer "yes". The message will only occur once

PASSWORD MANAGEMENT

Our external auditors require that we implement new password management procedures which will greatly improve the security of our system and our data. As part of Banner 7.5, these new procedures required by our auditors are outlined below.

Every 90 days, the system will require all users to change their Banner password. Users will receive a 5 day "grace period" during which Banner will remind all users that their password is about to expire. During each login to Banner during the grace period, a message like "ORA-28002: the password will expire within x days" will be displayed. During this grace period, the system will permit password changes at any time by clicking on the "Change Banner Password" link on the right side of the Banner General Menu screen or by going directly to the GUAPSWD form.

If a user password is not changed during the 5 day grace period, the password will expire. The next time the user attempts to login to Banner, they will receive a message like "ORA-28001: the password has expired". Click <OK> and a prompt to change your password will appear. Users will NOT be able to get into Banner until they have changed their password.

**To avoid problems with Banner job submission, users MUST change their password during the 5 day grace period. Otherwise the password may expire when Banner job submission is run and that will cause the job to crash.**

If a user password has expired and they try to login to Cognos, FormFusion, or Intellecheck, they will receive the message "ORA-28001: the password has expired", but they will NOT be able to change their password from within those programs. The user will have to go to Banner and change their password as described above, after which they will be able to login to Cognos, FormFusion, or Intellecheck.

When password changes are made, the new password must be as follows:

1) the password must be at least 6 characters long
2) the password must contain at least one letter and one number
3) the password cannot contain any of the punctuation marks @$&"(),<>`;=#
4) the password cannot be the same as your Banner user name
5) previous passwords cannot be reused for 3 years

If the new password does NOT meet all of the above criteria, an error message will be displayed and the user will need to try again.

NEW! Case-sensitive passwords for Banner, Millennium and Cognos have been introduced for increased security.

Up until now, everyone could type their database password in upper case or lower case or any combination of upper and lower case. For example, if your password was apple256, you could type apple256 or APPLE256 or ApPLe256 and all of those variations would be accepted. With Banner 8.3/8.4/8.5, passwords will be case sensitive, so if your password is AppLe256, it always needs to be entered *exactly* that way, with an upper case "A" and an upper case "L", and the other letters in lower case.  Otherwise, it will not be accepted.

Furthermore, when accessing Banner 8.3/8.4/8.5 for the first time, some users may be prompted to install the latest version of Java. In that case, accept the installation and follow the instructions that will be presented to you.

Reminder: the supported browsers for Banner are Internet Explorer 7.x or 8.x (Windows) and Safari (Mac).

If you experience any difficulties, please contact the Employee Service Desk at ext. 4357.

If you forget your password, or your account becomes locked, please either submit the following form: https://www.wlu.ca/forms_detail.php?grp_id=12689&frm_id=2680 (login with Novel username/password); contact the Employee Services Desk at ext. 4357, or see us at BA304 to have your password reset.

Account Terminations

Accounts Affected:

* OMNIS/Xshell
* Oracle - Banner, COGNOS

Employee Termination:

When an employee is terminating from Laurier, ITS is notified by Human Resources. If the employee has been setup with an Omnis, Oracle - Banner/Cognos account, then all access to these accounts would be terminated on the employee's last day of employment. It is the responsibility of the employee to clean out any personal files or have files transferred to another user, prior to his/her termination date.

Please Note: Supervisors/Managers are responsible to notify ITS when a student position has expired.

Position Change:

When an employee changes positions within Laurier, ITS is notified by Human Resources. If the employee has been setup with a Omnis, or Oracle account, the employee's access to these accounts will be terminated. It is the responsibility of the employee to notify ITS to have their Novell account and email account changed.

If the employee requires access to an Oracle account in their new position, then either the Manager or employee should complete the online form found here. The form must also have module approval. When the form has been signed in all areas - then the form should be forwarded to ITS (Ellen Petillot) for processing. ITS will notify the employee when the account has been setup and that the password(s) can be picked up by the employee.

Any questions regarding the account termination process should be directed to:

Cory Richardson-Crews, Information Technology Services, Ext. 3125.
