Academic Probation

Academic Probation

Students are placed on Academic Probation when they have completed 4.0 credit attempts at Laurier, and achieved a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) between 2.00 and 3.99.

If you are on probation, it means something must change for you to achieve academic success at university. Consider Academic Probation an early warning system.

I’m on Academic Probation, what should I do now?

The first step is to come visit your Academic advisor by booking an appointment online. Better course selection and planning will help set the foundation for success. For some students, recognizing it is more important to be successful than quick will be enough to accomplish change. Taking fewer courses each semester to maximize success is often a good strategy.

For other students, a better balanced courseload in terms of electives and required courses, and in terms of spreading your classes (and essays and mid-terms!) out over five days instead of stacking them on three days will be the change they need.

Some students will need to consider re-taking courses to bring up their GPA. You may repeat up to 2.0 credits and we urge you to consult an advisor for help on this process.

Please review this full list of resources available to help you achieve success and come in and talk to an advisor. Career Development Centre and the Learning Services Centre are necessary first stops on the road back to success.

How do I get off of Probation?

You will be reassessed after you have completed another 4.0 credit attempts. At the end of the additional 4.0 credits (which may be spread out over more than one academic year,) you must have raised your cumulative GPA back above 4.0.

What happens if I fall below a 4.0 after being Probation?

If your cumulative GPA falls below a 4.0 again, you will be Required to Withdraw from the University. You only get one probation period, so you must take advantage of the help available.
