Pre-Service or Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards



Internal Applications to the Student Awards Office (Deadline: April 4th)

Note: Other awards may also appear on the Student Awards’ site that are also applicable. These awards follow a different deadline (October 16, 2013). Be sure to check!

Berniece Brown Education Award (Value: $500)

Awarded annually to a full time student in the Bachelor of Education Program at the Waterloo campus who is a long-term resident of Ontario, a Canadian citizen, Permanent resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person, and who has demonstrated financial need. The successful recipient will demonstrate a strong commitment to extra-curricular and/or community involvement. Preference will be given to a student who has children.

J. W. Gerth Memorial Award (Value: Up to $893.50)

Awarded annually to a full time second entry student in the Bachelor of Education program at the Waterloo campus; preference will be given to a student who attended elementary or secondary school in the Waterloo Region District School Board; demonstrates a high and consistent level of participation in physical activity and a strong commitment to extra curricular and/or community involvement; demonstrates average academic achievement (minimum cumulative GPA of 7.0 [B-]); Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person; long-term resident of Ontario; proven financial need.

Lynne Hannay Inquiry Scholarship (Value: No Cash Value)
Annual Scholarship granted to the undergraduate student in the consecutive Bachelor of Education program who submits the highest quality Inquiry Project.  The Inquiry Project requires TECs to address a classroom and school-based problem identified during their practica in a Professional Development School.

Maxill Vincent Rhody Award (Value: $2,847.20)
Open to full time students in the Faculty of Education. Strong consideration will be given to applicants who are hardworking, resourceful, determined individuals as demonstrated through family and community involvement. Recipient must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person; long term resident of Ontario with proven financial need.  First preference given to candidates who are single custodial parents.

Marg & John Whitehouse Award for Educational Excellence (Value: $436.49)

The successful recipient demonstrates a high and consistent level of interest in teaching and mentoring children through involvement in extra-curricular activities; average academic achievement (minimum cumulative GPA 7.0 (B-); preference is given to students who attended elementary and secondary education in Upper Grand District School Board; Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident (or landed immigrant) or Protected Persons; long-term resident of Ontario; proven financial need.

Vera Bettridge Catholic Education Award (Value: $1471.45)

The successful recipient must focus his/her study in special education with the intent to teach special education. Preference will be given to a Catholic student who will seek employment in the Catholic school system. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person; be a long term resident of Ontario; and demonstrate financial need.

Don Galbraith Preservice- Science Teacher's Association of Ontario (Value: No cash value, Certificate)

Demonstrates an exemplary commitment to pre-service science program and provides an effective learning environment for students in practicum. Nominations by Science instructors, in P/J and J/I programs. Must submit an article or project for publication.

ETFO Faculty of Education Award (Value: $500)

Recipient demonstrates academic excellence; exemplary teaching practices; initiative to broaden personal experience: leadership in student government, support for other TECs, provincial/local ETFO involvement; commitment to social justice and equity. Recipient is to be recommended by both Field Supervisor and Associate Teacher in writing.

OECTA Faculty of Education Award (Value: $1,000)

Demonstrates excellence in Teaching in the Catholic Schools course. (Prize may be shared by 2 TECs ). Nomination by course instructor for Teaching in Catholic Schools course.

Ontario Modern Languages Teaching Association (OMLTA): H. G. Mitchell Award (Value:)
Excellence in both academic and practicum pre-service programs, demonstrating attributes of a potentially outstanding FSL/International language teacher. Individual is nominated by the FSL instructor.

Gold Medal (No monetary value)
Highest program GPA.

Student Leadership (Value: Varies)
Exemplary modeling of Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards; demonstrated leadership and superior interst in learning about education; dedication to promoting the well-being of fellow TECs; commitment to the FOE. TECs nominate candidates and process is overseen by EDSOC and Faculty Advisors.
