Upon admission to the program, each student will be assigned an advisor in the Faculty of Education. Each year, students will be required to complete†a Program Progression Plan. The Program Progression Plan is developed in consultation with and approved by the Advisor. If a student is completing the thesis option, then an Advisor provides advising on the thesis work undertaken by the student. The Advisor may or may not serve as the thesis committee chair.
Students must maintain continuous enrolment in the program until completion. Consideration of requests for Temporary Withdrawal will be made on a case-by-case basis and will be adjudicated through the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. Leaves of absence, changes to registration status, and so forth, are considered by the Graduate Student Appeals Committee of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. Eligibility for leaves is governed by the policies of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (http://www.wlu.ca/gradstudies/calendar). Students must register in their required courses by deadlines set by the Office of the Registrar.
Faculty residency requirement:
All required courses are taken at the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University. EU 504 Quantitative research methods or EU 505 Qualitative research methods may also be taken in other departments, where approved equivalent courses pre-exist, IF THE COURSE IS NOT OFFERED AT THE FACULTY OF EDUCATON DURING THE CALENDAR YEAR. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all criteria for graduation are met. Students must apply to graduate and adhere to deadlines set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies for eligibility to graduate once degree requirements are met.†
Integrated residency requirement:
Candidates in the thesis option may elect to take a course outside of the Faculty of Education. Candidates in the course-only option must take at least two electives in a Faculty outside of the Faculty of Education. Candidates are required to have the necessary prerequisites for any course taken outside of the Faculty of Education.
Courses offered at the Faculty of Education will be offered as a combination of on-line and face-to-face classes Ė with the proportion to be determined by the instructor. Given that the majority of applicants are expected to be teachers, all courses offered at the Faculty of Education will be offered at appropriate times for practicing teachers (i.e., evenings and weekends during school year, and daytime during Spring term). Courses in other Faculties may be offered either in-person, combination of on-line and face-to-face, or fully online. In addition, while most courses are offered in a variety of time slots, it cannot be guaranteed that all courses outside of the Faculty of Education are offered in the evenings, or that they are offered every year. Progress Progression Plan (PPP):
During the second year of registration and annually thereafter, all students enrolled in the program must complete a Program Progression Plan/update (PPP). The PPP will outline courses and/or artifacts completed, the objectives for the next year, courses yet to be taken, and anticipated completion dates. The PPP must be reviewed and approved by the Academic Advisor in order for the student to continue to register in the program. The PPP will be electronically submitted.
Progression and degree requirements:
A student must attain at least a B- grade in each course and must present and defend an acceptable thesis/research paper when required by the program.

Faculty of Education Grade Reassessment Policy:
Master's students must attain a minimum B- in each course taken in fulfillment of the graduate degree requirements (see Academic Standing for current Graduate Calendar).† A graduate student who receives an overall final grade below a B- in a course will have the grade of F registered in their official transcripts.† Grade reassessment policies for the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are outlined in the Wilfrid Laurier University Graduate Calendar: http://www.wlu.ca/calendars/section.php?cal=3&s=470&sp=1673&ss=2034&y=51.
Specifically noted from these policies is the following:
Each department, Faculty, or School may have individualized processes for formal grade reassessment, but typically this will involve having at least one other instructor who has taught the course in question or who is familiar with the content of the course reassess an unmarked copy of the assignment(s), examination(s), or other course requirement(s) in question. The administrative officer who receives the formal request for grade reassessment will inform the student of his or her decision in writing within four weeks of receiving the request. The grade reassessment may cause the grade to be raised, lowered, or remain the same.
The Faculty of Education Grade Reassessment Policy for individual assignments will follow the guidelines indicated above.
In the event that the studentís overall grade results in a grade below a B- (or a failure), the following additional polices apply:
∑ Students receiving lower than an overall B- in 70% or more of the assignments in the course will be required to retake the course;
∑ Students receiving lower than an overall B- as a result of a summative assessment (i.e., exam or final paper) will be given the opportunity to rewrite the summative assessment which will consist of a different but similar assessment. The student will receive no more than a B- on the overall course provided that the reassessed summative assessment is assessed at a minimum grade of B-.

Enrolment in EU 599 Thesis course is only permitted following the completion of the course requirements.† A student may be permitted to enrol either concurrently in EU 599 with their final course, or prior to their final course with the permission of their Advisor and the Graduate Coordinator.† The final course must be taken in the semester immediately following the first enrolment in EU 599 and continuous enrolment in EU 599 must be maintained. Students must be enrolled in EU†599 from the onset of the preparation of the proposal.† The thesis is a major requirement or an option in many masterís programs and when completed it marks the culmination of a studentís program. The masterís thesis must demonstrate the studentís capacity for independent work and must be single-authored. It should demonstrate a scholarly approach to the subject matter and a clear understanding of how the work fits with the relevant practice and/or literature of the discipline concerned. To complete the thesis requirement, students must engage in a relevant and applied research, with a particular emphasis on integrating the research to relevant education practices (i.e., administrative, teaching, learning, policy, etc.). The examination of a thesis will consist of procedures outlined by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (see https://www.wlu.ca/calendars/section.php?cal=3&s=338&ss=1474&y=41), as well as a public lecture. These procedures define supervisory committee structure, proposal and thesis guidelines, as well as guidelines for thesis examination.†

The portfolio will be completed throughout the program and presented during the EU 598 Capstone course.† The portfolio will represent evidence of mastery of the program goals that will be explained with†a†five†- eight†page written narrative and a scholarly†presentation of four artifacts related to the Master of Education program goals.
These artifacts are intended to be significant bodies of work that show evidence of integrated learning and understanding. Artifacts may include, but are not limited to the following: (a) action/teacher research projects of limited scope, (b) manuscript submissions for publications, (c) presentations at practitioner or scholarly conferences or inservice workshops, (d) development of integrated units of study for pupils or other students (i.e., mentorship programs), (e) curriculum development. The artifacts may be extensions of assignments from other courses taken through the program.
The portfolio will be presented to peers, the Capstone course instructor, and the studentís advisor. The presentation will occur at or near the end of the EU 598 Capstone. The portfolio will be evaluated by the studentís advisor and the Capstone course instructor. The portfolio will be evaluated as a pass/fail for each program goal, and all program goals must achieve a pass by both evaluators in order to satisfy the portfolio component. In the event the student is unsuccessful on first review of the final portfolio, the student will be provided with suggestions to revise it for a reexamination.
Students in the courses-only option will prepare and present a 10-15 minute presentation on their progress on at least two program goals at a Portfolio Colloquium to be held during the students' second year in the program.† Students will present to incoming MEd students enrolled in the EU 501 course.† Formative peer feedback by two faculty evaluators will be provided using the Portfolio Feedback Evaluation Tool.† Copies of completed forms will be retained in students' official files.
The Portfolio Colloquium is a progression requirement.† If students are uncertain whether or not they will pursue the courses-only option or thesis option by the time the Portfolio Colloquium will take place, students are advised to complete the Portfolio Colloquium as it is a rogression requirement and will not be offered independently.
Students enrolled full-time (thesis option only) have two academic years to complete the program. Part-time students must maintain continuous enrolment for a minimum of 9 academic terms but no longer than 18 academic terms, after which time the student may be withdrawn from the program. Readmission will require a new application for admission to the program.
