Summer Literacy Booster Camp
The Faculty of Education is about to embark on an exciting project designed to boost the literacy skills of students from the Waterloo Region and Waterloo Catholic District School Boards. Read on . . . this is a project that might just be right for you!
Supported by funding from a WLU Special Initiatives Grant, our partnering Waterloo boards and corporate donations, planning is currently underway for a Summer Literacy Booster Camp to be offered during the second and third weeks of July, 2009. The camp, which will operate during the mornings only, will provide support for approximately 25 grade 2 students selected from those nominated by their school. This pilot program will provide intensive research-based intervention based on diagnostic assessment of individual needs to increase students’ reading and writing achievement as well as foster their desire to read and write and increase their sense of self-efficacy as readers and writers. Parent sessions and home literacy activities will also be incorporated into the program to build the capacity of families to support the literacy development of their children who are in the program as well as other children in the family who do not have access to the program.
A highly experienced practicing teacher with specialist qualifications in language literacy has been selected to provide instructional leadership throughout the program. BUT . . . we are seeking additional qualified teachers with a genuine passion for literacy to work with the lead teacher in designing and delivering targeted instruction for our “literacy campers.” This would be a wonderful opportunity for our very own Faculty of Education alumni to build their knowledge and skills in literacy assessment and instruction and augment their professional portfolios! If you think you might be interested in taking advantage of this terrific (albeit not very well paid) opportunity, please contact Norma at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 519-884-0710 ext 3937.
