Mission and Goals



Our Mission:

The Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University fosters excellence in teacher education and scholarship through inquiry, reflection, and collaborative sustained partnerships in learning.


Our Updated Program Goals:

Approved at Divisional Council, October 7, 2011

Planning:† Design short and long term instructional plans that are developmentally appropriate and relevant to diverse student experiences using appropriate technologies and resources.

Instructional Strategies:† Implement a broad range of appropriate instructional strategies and technologies that promote student learning, including collaborative, creative and critical thinking skills.

Learning Environment:† Use effective†strategies to develop positive relationships and create an inclusive†learning environment that supports the development of self-regulated, adaptive learners.

Communication:† Communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of audiences using various media including both face-to-face interaction and on-line methods, in written, visual, and oral forms.

Professional Knowledge:† Construct and apply professional knowledge and understanding of students, Ontario curriculum, subject knowledge, legislation, teaching practices, and classroom management strategies to promote the learning achievement of their pupils.

Inquiry:† Use inquiry and reflection to improve and inform practice.

Professionalism:† Demonstrate qualities that characterize professionalism.

Assessment:† Conduct ongoing assessment of pupilsí progress, make data-informed decisions for differentiated instruction, evaluate student achievement and regularly communicate results to students and parents/guardians.

Continuous Learning:† Adapt and refine their teaching practices through continuous learning and reflection, using a variety of sources and resources including collaborative, professional learning networks in face-to-face and digital environments.

These goals are aligned with the principles of our conceptual framework and to the four themes of the program.
