This education forum featured James Gray-Donald, VP Sustainability at Bentall Kennedy, and Anthea Rowe, Director of Content Development at Network for Business Sustainability, who spoke on WLU’s campus about how the building a sustainable culture. This forum focused on how to engage employees in your sustainability initiatives through building a true culture of sustainability. James Gray-Donald recounted his experiences with employee engagement and working towards sustainability goals at Bentall Kennedy and Sears Canada. Anthea Rowe of the Network for Business Sustainability, spoke about recent research and recommended actions for building organizational culture.

A fantastic crowd of people from across the community came together to celebrate the accomplishments of Regional Carbon Initiative members and the individuals in their workplaces who are leading environmental action. Aligned with the launch of our 2011 Report, inspiring stories were shared of local individuals and organizations championing change for a sustainable future. Hundreds of community members joined Sustainable Waterloo Region in recognizing Regional Carbon Initiative members’ progress towards reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and in celebrating the collective progress towards a more sustainable region.

On March 22nd, 2011, Sustainable Waterloo hosted 300 people to celebrate the commitments and achievements of our 2010 Regional Carbon Initiative members. Highlights from the event came from member presentations from the Mennonite Central Committee and the Region of Waterloo on GHG reduction projects.
Past Event: Clean Technology with Dr. Tom Rand

The Laurier Net Impact Chapter and the CMA Centre for Business and Sustainability jointly presented Dr. Tom Rand, author of “Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World.” Tom Rand founded VCi Green Funds, a private venture fund to provide angel and venture capital to companies developing emission reduction technologies. He is currently the Cleantech Practice Lead Advisor at the MaRS Discovery District, helping the next generation of Canadian Cleantech companies grow to global leadership, and the co-developer of The Planet Traveler, North America’s “greenest” hotel, located in Toronto.
Tom related the relative advantages and costs of various forms of clean technology, and offered an outline of what is required, economically and politically, to enable a global transformation away from fossil fuels and toward clean sources of energy.

Scott Martin, a partner with Efficiency Engineering Inc., outlined the reasons for performing an energy audit, how to prepare for one, the process involved in completing one, and strategies for analyzing its outcomes.

The CMA Centre for Business & Sustainability is Presenting Sponsor of Sustainable Waterloo's workshop series for 2010/2011. Radoslav S. Dimitrov, Laura Zizzo and Sarah English attended the Copenhagen conference and were closely following the analysis of conclusions from the 12 days of climate negotiation. These three panelists aimed to answer questions such as: How will countries be held accountable for their emissions? How will reductions be monitored? In what ways are international governments exerting their power? Where does Canada fit in? How do ambitious provincial targets fit with our national plans? What does this mean for local organizations? to help provide the Region with some clarity on the issues raised by the Copenhagen Accord.

Each of these speakers will provide insights on how LEED certification fits into their environmental strategies, the features of their LEED buildings, as well as their expected energy savings.
