Students are expected to apply for any financial awards for which they are eligible. Consequently, some students may enter the MA program with a SSHRC or OGS award. Students who enter the program with an external award are eligible for an incentive scholarship (see below). Other funding opportunities are available.
Standard funding: Full-time eligible students typically receive an average of $12,000 for each eligible year of study (comprising teaching assistantships and scholarship). Student may at times find supplementary funding through research assistantships or studentships, from faculty research grants. Graduate students may also apply for or receive support from bursaries and endowment opportunities as available through the Student Awards Office.Financial support for MA in political science students is available from several sources including:
- Assistantships for the fall and winter term (available to all full-time students);
- WLU Graduate Scholarships, awarded on a competitive basis to full-time graduate students who achieve high academic standing. These scholarships are tenable for study at Laurier while enrolled as a full-time student;
- Ontario Graduate Scholarships, subject to provincial funding levels. These are competitive awards for which all students seeking graduate admissions should apply. Awards are based on merit;
- SSHRC CGS MA Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded based on merit, and are subject to federal funding levels. These competitive awards should be considered as a potential source of funding for all students seeking graduate admissions.
Incentive scholarship: Major award holders (OGS, CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) are eligible for top-up funding up to $12,000 (which includes the Dean's Scholarship, valued at $7,500), in addition to the external award.Explore the opportunities available at Wilfrid Laurier University for your graduate studies by visiting the WLU Graduate Studies website.
