Kanata Centre: Art Workshops for Personal Growth and Ministry

The arts give us a pathway to our heart and souls and connect us to the Divine Mystery. In these workshops, the intention is that participants will learn new skills that they will use in expressing their spirituality. These skills could be used in a personal journal, in prayer time, in parish groups or corporate worship.

All workshops will be held in an atmosphere that affirms creativity and the holiness of the artist and all persons. Focus will be on process and experimentation. There are no "mistakes" in art, only new paths to follow.

Participants can register for sessions on an individual basis at a cost of $25 (+ HST) or may choose to take all six sessions at a discounted cost of $130 (+ HST).

Session Overview

Session One: Painting Simple Landscapes

Landscapes offer us everyday inspiration, beauty and joy. They provide for us the harmony of plant, earth and sky. Using acrylic paints on paper or canvas and inspired by your own personal photographs or magazine photos that will be provided, enjoy expressing the splendor of landscapes.

Session Two: Playing With Clay

Clay is the perfect material to enliven your meditation or prayer time! Quickly the rhythms of kneading and rolling push out the day's distractions and help you enter a space ready for reflection. You will learn a few clay working basics and the the time will be yours to explore this tactile way to enrich your conversations with the Master Potter.

Session Three: Mandalas

"Mandala" is the Sanskrit world for "circle"; a sacred circle meaning both the centre and circumference of the circle. Around the world and across all times, circular symbols have been integral to centering one's spirit and allowing the expression of wholeness and unity. After a short meditation, participants will be encouraged to draw a circle and fill it with whatever colours, shapes or lines feel right at that time. There are no rules about the content of the Mandala, simply allow your inner self to express on paper.

Session Four: You Can Draw

When we are young we just pick up pencils and crayons and draw. We aren't told, "Only people with talent can draw." We just do it and we are told, "It is beautiful!" Here is your chance to pick up those pencils again and through easy exercises discover that drawing is fun and therapeutic.

Session Five: Collage

Through choosing, ripping and pasting magazine images, participants will have fun creating new worlds that at first may have seemingly inexplicable combinations, but later reveal deep meaning and connections to heart and soul.

Session Six: Mono Printing

Treat yourself to a morning of creative expression and experimenting with paint and paper. Learn easy ways to create "one of a kind" prints that will amaze. You'll be filling your walls and making Christmas gifts or cards in no time!
